Set up a computer for a friend today and everything went great until I tried to connect to the internet. The ethernet card shows installed and no problems. I think it's something in my configuration. I have TCP/IP and NETBEUI protocols installed and the card shows those in it's properties too. I used the internet connection wizard and tried to connect and no dice. I checked winipcfg and I have the correct adapter in the adapter field and it was showing the correct IP address. Still no connection. I went back into winipcfg and released the connection and then renewed it. Went through the connection wizard again. Still no connection. I open internet explorer and it gets stuck at "detecting proxy servers" and that's where it ends. It doesn't go any further no matter what I do. So, what am I doing wrong?

First of all,
Are you able to ping to internet or any ip address?
c:\> ping www.yahoo.com
if you get ping reply, that means, your IE setting is wrong or it could be your DNS is not set up properly.
If you can't get a ping reply, your network is not set up right.
In your case, if you can renew ip address, that means your internet is okay, you may want to check dhcp and/or manually enter the dns onto the network properties.
Then you should be able to get on the net.

homeflash, hey thanks :) I'm not going to have a chance to check into it again until at least tomorrow or Saturday so feel free to "track this message". As soon as I get a chance I'm headed there to work on it again as it's not here at my house. I'll follow up on this then and please, in the meantime, if you have any input as to what else to check or whatever you're comments are always appreciated and read .... everyone, that is :)

My first question is how is your friend connecting to the net? Through a network at her employment? Can you give some more details about the connection needed? Like for example, where the configuration information was obtained?
Note too....Netbeui probably isn't needed.

This may sound obvious/stupid, but I figured I'd mention that when I had this problem it was because I was plugging in my ethernet cable during computer operation, and no matter how much configuring I did, it didn't work unless I booted up with the cable active in the ethernet card.

netbiu whatever not needed, reset the modem, cable ones are bad and the last post is probably all the troubleshooting you need.

Well... with all I've read and all I've done, I'm beginning to think it may be the modem itself.
When resetting the modem, I have the computer shutdown and I don't turn on the computer until the modem is up and fully lit.
A tech from the cable company is coming on Tuesday, so I still have a challenge until then... LOL I may sound annoyed at times, but I love trying to figure this stuff out.
Thanks for all the help, people! And thanks in advance for those of you that have anything to add or suggest :)
