Well, i recently got an old computer going for my aunt, she just needs a computer to do word processing and whatnot on. So i installed good ol Windows 98 on it. Anyway, when I installed Microsoft Office 97 Pro, the setup screen, the old one where it said "Starting Microsoft... Setup...Please Wait", well thats where setup just stops and the computer hangs and must be restarted. The same thing happens with Publisher 98 which uses the same setup process, however im able to install other applications that use a different process of installing themselves. Any ideas as to how to get around this issue?

I seems that the setup works actually, just takes a long time to get moving but a very slow process. HOWEVER; about 60% it stated setup could not complete as the computer was Out of Memory. Could setup be using that much memory? I know i only have 32 MB, how can i free up some of that, theres no programs running in the system tray.

I think Office needs a lot of memory, 32mb might not be enough for win98 and Office. But anyway, if virtual memory is working ok, I would think it should work. But maybe very slowly.

Check to make sure the swap file's size is not limited.

Another possibility is that it's running out of hard drive space. You sometimes get an 'out of memoty' message for low disk space.

Sorry, I do not check for private messages

The system (as described) meets the minimum requirements
(considering disk space) for a 98 install and it's ancillary components (Office, etc).

You may want to update the Windows installer.

As well, remove any Windows components that aren't used. (Thinking speed/memory here). Any games, themes, sounds,

I have a P120 32MB RAM 2GB HD laptop and I run 98lite with Word 2000, Excel 2000, Access 2000, IE 5.5, VB6, olus others. You need to install each application minimally. She probably doesn't need Publisher, just Word and maybe Excel, not the Office Suite addons.

Well, nothing seemed to work, so i installed Office 2000, works a bit slow but its not annoyingly slow so its ok. the install process was fast and without problems, so im just not sure. And by the way, the setup for 97 later told me there was an illegal operation or something, so that whole setup was just riddled with errors. thanks for help.

Geez i'd at least installed 64 mb of ram lol.

Heck I got 4 sticks 80mb total of 72 pin simms on ebay for under $5 shipped.

I thought it was laptop ram tho cause it was listed as 144 pin sdram so if ya ebay read carefully.
