I probably won't get a responce in time, since I will do this the stupid way by reinstalling win98SE first on 1 partition and then win2K on another, and allowing win2K to create the dual boot.

However, if by chance anyone knows how I can fix the boot.ini file, such that it will boot directly into my Win2K please let me know.

Problem:

I have a 40 gig HD partitioned into 2 20 gig. I first installed win98 on 1, and then win2K on the other. Dual booting worked perfectly.

Tonight, I decided I really have to do a clean install on win98. Now stupid me, did this before reading any information about creating ERD(Emergency Recovery Disk). Therefore, I can not follow the advice that I have read about using the win2k boot disk to fix the dual boot.

Instead, I have managed to install win98SE perfectly, and to boot into win98SE perfectly. However, now I can not boot into win2K at all. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!!

You erased the NT mbr (master boot record) and replaced it with a WIN mbr. When you load W2K it backs up the WIN mbr into a file called bootsect.dos and it uses boot.ini and ntldr (which is in the NT mbr) to either load bootsect.dos and boot into WIN or not load it and boot into W2K.

All is not lost...

It's really quite simple to recover the dual-boot - you run the Repair sequence which includes restoring the W2K/NT mbr.

The following links will take you through various options - with/without an ERD.

As regards your initial 'dilemma...(?)' installing '98 first and the W2K 'is' the preferred sequence (oldest OS first through to newest last). And as you installed '98 first and then W2K, W2K should have automatically set itself to be the default OS to boot; the last NT style OS (NT, W2K, XP) in sets itself as the default.

To change to the default OS to boot:

On the Desktop: MyComputer\Properties\Start-up/Shut-down tab gives you the option to set teh default OS from the drop-down list in the display 'box'...

W2K repair tutorials...

(Usually an NT/W2K/XP repair is best executed via CD or floppies boot, and then you go in via the Set-up\repair (recovery) etc...)
