I got a computer supplused for storage at my work. When I started it up it wants a command interpretor and has no drives c:\, a:\ or d:\. It wont boot from the diskette or cd on start up when I tell the Bios to do so. Is there anything I could do to save this hard drive?

Howdy Greg!

If you have access to another computer you might slave the drive and see what is on it.

The message you're getting is a software error and not hardware so the HD is probably good.

Go into cmos and make sure the HD and floppy are identified properly--usually as auto for the HD. Set the boot sequence to a: c: cd rom or at least a: c: Get a boot disk of the same OS as is on the HD and that you know is good. If it doesn't boot from the floppy the drive is bad or not connected properly. If it does boot type "sys c:" at the a: prompt. Remove the floppy and reboot. It should boot from the HD. This should be enough to verify the drive is good. You'll probably want to reformat it and start over with your own OS.
