Comment:

I ran FDISK on an old machine with w95 and now I want to install w98. After I boot up with the startup disk I get the message "no drives found, aborting installation". I know the CD-ROM works as I used it prior to running FDISK.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

You need to select boot from cd drive option in the bios.

I tried that option with no luck. Let me tell you what the system does when using the win98 s/u disk.It goes through post with no problems. Then the bios for the ide controller loads up and detects the attached devices which are the HDD and the CDROM. Then the s/u disk gives you option of loading WIN98 with or without CDROM support and i'm selecting with as to load WIN98 from the cdrom drive. It then loads the generic Oak technologies driver for the cdrom, then it says Device Name_____'MSCD001'
it then says:No drives found, aborting installation. It then loads up the ataptec device drivers and scans the bus. At the end it says Device Driver not found'MSCD001' then the next line says No valid cdrom device drivers selected. The HDD has one primary DOS partition and i deleted it,Re-created a new one,and formatted the drive. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

The basic CD-ROM driver on the windows 98 floppy does not work on all CD-ROM's their are som old CD-ROM's that you need to download the driver for and make a boot disk with that driver.

Open the system and get the info on your CD-ROM. download the device driver for it.

you also may want to look into a boot disk call CD ROM GOD.

After rereading this post - I would have to agree with John - the S/U disk will be for most CDROM's but not all, especially the older CDROM's. The reason I asked about formatting is because format is not on my Windows 98 startup disk that came with Windows98 CD - I need the CD to access format.com in the Win98 folder.
