i keep getting error 680 no dial tone when i try to connect
it happened after i contracted spysherrif..
i did all the clean up for that and followed microsoft instructions for error 680 and still i have the error..

i am sure the modem is ok..

i have a feeling it is a setting of some sort that has changed or a missing file..

the phone line is ok the modem had been reinstalled and says it is working properly? no conflicts etc..

any new ideas
i cant stand it getting the better of me..
and i need help!!

need to able to connect to the internet asap..

thanks all

I had that problem once and finally resorted to a format/installto fix it.
Something I didn't think of and wish I had tried, was to try removing and reinstalling the dial-up adapter in the Control Panel > Network window.

It very likely is a setting.

Try going to networking or dialup [whichever in w98] and 'make a new connrction'.

The default settings may get you going.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

The modem may be dialing too quickly. That is, before a dial tone is recognized.

If so go to 'additional dial strings' or something very similar.

Put in ATW

Her's the explanation of what ATW does:

Waits for dial tone before dialing. The modem then waits for the
time specified in register S7. If it receives a dial tone before
the time delay expires, it continues dialing; otherwise, it
returns NO DIALTONE and hangs up.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Have you tried going into modem properties in control panel and removing tick from 'wait for dial tone before dialing'?

Probably far too hopeful but you could try going to Device Manager and removing the modem entry then rebooting. Sometimes Windows sorts things out on reboot.

"i would also like to try the dial up adapter removal and reinstall but how do i know what to reinstall which adapter"

Add 'Adapter > Microsoft > Dialup adapter

"does anyone know if i should be on windows login or microsoft family log in?"

It doesn't really matter, but use 'Windows login' to avoid having to log in on every boot.

http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/archive/index.php/t-39307.html Take a look at the above discussion. Also might try lowering the Receive Buffer... this is done by My Computer...Control Panel...Modems...On General Tab Click On Properties...Then on the Connections Tab...Then Port Setting...You will see an option to "Select lower setting to correct connection problems"
Good Luck

Sorry don't see how the receive buffer can be the cause of the problem. Disregard.

Infuriating indeed. I assume you've looked at the multitude of Google hits under "error 680 no dial tone".

I suppose spysherrif might have messed up some registry entry, although I accept one would expect re-install of the modem to fix it.

Chances are it is far too late but you could try scanreg /restore (you shut down to MS-DOS and type this followed by Return key). If you still have a registry around that pre-dates both spysherrif and this problem you could select that and give it a whirl.

You type exit (then usual Return) to restart Windows. Any programs after that date are likely to need re-install.
