Hi all,
I was doing a repair lately on the above spec comp that was having hardware probs. The thing I want to know is this.....When I went to look for the device manager it wasnt there. Clicking on System in the Control panel only gave me the options of General and Performance. I even upgraded the machine to Win 98 and it was the same. Does anybody know how this could have occured or even how to do it if I ever felt like it. Just curious. It was a Packard Hell(intentional typo)comp by the way.
Thanks in advance.
Jonesy

Although i don't know what the problem is, it is unlikely to be software corruption. i think it is likely to be a security implementation.

If you know about implementing system policies, you could try to undo the implematation. Otherwise, you will need to backup the data, format the drive and start again.

Hi jonesy

This issue may occur if one or more of the following files is missing or damaged

Sysdm.cpl
Setupx.dll
Setup4.dll

Using SFC, extract these three files from the Win98 CD and copy them to
C:\Windows\System folder

Good luck

Thanks to both of ye for the replies. As it happened I did format and start again - I had done so before posting the original message. Regarding the replies.... what is SFC Krystyna? and could you point me in the direction of where I could get some info on security policies David.
Thanks once again.

Hi jonesy

In Win98, SFC is System File Checker.
You can check for altered or corrupt files, or use SFC to extract original files from your Windows CD or cab files (if they are installed on your hard drive)

SFC is not available in Win95.
