No cd-rom drives

Comment:
My Windows doesn't recognize my cd-rom drives for some reason. After I installed something from my motherboard disc (I think it was something for using ASCII table 850 or something) I had no more cd-rom drives. Can someone tell me what's wrong and give me a solution?

try running the computer w/ the IDE (wide) cables unplugged from the drives. shutdown and start up w/ them plugged in. does device manager say they are working properly?
if you're not sure what was installed can you not uninstall it.

to DAVEINCAPS: I'm afraid it doesn't.
to bigtallboy: I'm not a technician, I'm just a 13 year old kid. I'd probably screw it up.
And no I can't uninstall it, because all I know is that it installed some .inf files, of which I have no idea what they are.

Exit to dos. At the c:\windows> prompt type:
scanreg/restore
and enter. Choose a registry to restore that has a date that is BEFORE you had the problem. When it's done, reboot. Post back results.

Hard to tell. A registry restore just resets the registry to the date you choose when, hopefully, it was working OK.
A registry restore won't fix the problem if it has to do with basic files that are missing or corrupted. But it seems to work good when some software you've just installed seems to screw things up.
Any software (if any) you installed after the date of the restored registry will need to be reinstalled--except of course the software that caused the problem. That's because although the software is still on the HD it won't be recorded correctly in the registry.
