I am stuck in safe mode. I tried to load my os over the existing one when I discovered that my CD-ROM drive does not show in "my computer" but it is showing in device manager. Should I remove CD-ROM from device manager knowing I will be rebooting to safe mode? Should this work?

I'm not clear on the sequence of events. Was CD drive not showing before or after you reloaded system? Whatever it won't hurt to delete it from Device Manager and try rebooting.
How are you reloading system and did you use a boot floppy?

Thanks, Derek. I have been stuck in safe mode for a long time now. That's when I decided to try a reload with a boot floppy with cd rom support. That is when I found out that the cd-rom was not present in "my computer", because it would not load. I was unsure about deleting from from device manager because I don't want to make matters worse. I know I will only be able to reboot to safe mode.

There is no "my computer" when booting from floppy, if the CD drive is recognised it will be assigned a drive letter.

In Safe Mode, the Windows drivers for the CD are not loaded - - this is by design
It is possible to load the DOS drivers for a Windows Safe Mode session

The cdrom won't show in safe mode anyway.

Much of the above was covered in MS article q143283 which is no longer on microsoft's site.
