I had no sound after reformatting my HD. Hiho in the driver forum help me get the correct drivers installed but I still have no sound. I have no volume control icon on the task bar to check that the audio might be muted. As hiho suggested. I went to control panel>>multimedia in an attempt to get the icon back.
In the perferred drop down it states "No Playback Devices" and is grayed out. The "show volume control on task bar" box is checked but is also grayed out. I can't check or uncheck the box. Basically I can not do anything with the audio tab of Multimedia. Is the a setting that I need to change?
Thanks to hiho in the driver forum. You got me this far. The driver problem is OK now. Now I believe its and Windows98se or other problem thats why I posted here.
ThanksJoe

You could try removing your sound card and then reinserting it into the expansion slot. Windows should then detect it and you can reinstall the drivers.

I installed a few hoping to get the correct one before hiho help me get the right one. The onboard sound card is recognized in Device Manager. It was not before I installed the last driver. Do I have to get rid of the other drivers before the right one functions?
Thanks'
Joe

For what ever resason you have the wrong driver installed-
"No Playback Devices" and is grayed out
"show volume control on task bar" box is checked but is also grayed out
Take the sound card out of the PC and read what is printed on it. This will give you a clue to the make and model and you will then get the correct drivers.
You do NOT have to uninstall the incorrect drives as they take up very little space and will not do any harm being there..
