Had to reinstall Win 98 after a C: drive error. I'm managing to get everything working except no matter what I do I cannot get the pc to recognize 256 colors. I installed the correct drivers for video & monitor... but all I get is 16 colors and I can't even change the monitor settings. I went into the BIOS to see if the monitor settings were off, but that did nothing. Also getting a PCI Communications error in devices ... even tho Modem is hooked correctly and I'm running Ethernet connection no problem. Can I fling this thing out the window now???!!! PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

If it has been working before I cann't understand why it doesn't work now. What you could do is to go to the Device Manager, change it to STANDARD VGA, reboot so the device list is reset. Shutdown and try to reinstall the VGA driver again.

The same thing happend to me after reformatting. I vaguely remember changing the settings in Safe Mode and then restarting. Give it a try and i think it might work.

You said you installed the correct drivers. What make and type Video Adaptor do you have? If you do not know, I question whether you installed the "Correct" drivers. Windows installs only a 'generic' driver, one which will work with most any video system but at low performance. To get the most out of your video system, you have to load the latest drivers from the manufacturer of your video adaptor. Or you can get drivers from the following (click below):
