I have a Dell desktop with a PIII running Win98. I signed up for cable internet service but their techies cannot get me running! They installed a NetLine 10/100 PCI Card and driver (v2.0) in my desktop. When I right click Network Neighborhood I can see the NIC listed with the other components on the Configuration tab (properties of the NIC show it as bound to TCP/IP).
Device Manager under system properties shows NIC without any conflicts. The cable internet does not work with my desktop, but it worked on the techies laptop.
When I run winipcfg, the only ethernet adapter available in the drop down box is a PPP adapter, no NIC! MS System Information tool lists TCP/IP NetTrans as a problem device.
The cable service techies have given up on me and I can't go back to analog... They told me I needed to take my destop to a "shop" to have it fixed. I think they should fix it, but they don't know how. They are convinced my McAfee Firewall has turned off the port needed to make this work. They uninstalled the Firewall but no go. They also tried moving the NIC to the other expansion slot to no avail.
I know someone can bail me out, this forum has been very helpful to me before. Thanks in advance.

Did you try uninstalling TCP-IP and installing again?
It looks like NDIS problem, reinstalling would fix that.

Peter, thanks for your reply. We have removed and reinstalled the NIC and drivers with no results. Is TCP/IP a separate application/utility? If it is something separate I'm not sure how to reinstall it. Would I use the Win98 CD?

RAC:
It usually is something simple and I did suggest this to the cable company tech, but he said the NIC was good because the device status under device manager says the NIC is working properly. Is he wrong about that?

Phil, it's very easy.
Right click on My Neighbourhood icon, go to properties- locate TCP-IP followed by your NIC and single click. Then choose remove.Reboot and all and go to the same place and click add protocols-microsoft TCP-IP ,you may need your win98 CD unless you have the cab files on the HD.
I have a suggestion tho',just for the heck of it add another protocol, say NetBeui(it's where TCP-IP is)before you remove TCP-IP.
This may not be an issue here, but I know that you should never be without a protocol in win NT,but again it may not be an issue here.
NetBeui is very simple to set up so don't worry.Add it and that's it,it can't be manually configured.
When you install TCP-IP again make sure you select to use DHCP (obtain addresss automaticaly) as that's where you're gonna get your ip address and DNS from.
When all working, remove NetBeui.
Good Luck
