Yesterday, I just installed a new logitech optical mouse and it is working fine so far...Previously, there was a mitsumi mouse being used.

I noticed that when the computer booted, there was a line in the setup still saying
C:\MTMMouse\Mouse and I wanted to "clean things up."

I deleted the MTMMitsumi folder from C:\Programs and when I restarted, I get an error message saying

"the file POINTCTL.exe cannot be found, etc...please remove the reference from the WIN.INI...."

So, I went to WIN.INI and removed the following line, thinking that would solve the problem:

load=c:\MTMMOUSE\POINTCTL.exe

When I rebooted, I got the following error message during the re-boot setup:

C:\C:\MTMMouse\Mouse/B/N/L=GB/M=8;16/A1/F/R=0
Bad Command or File.

Three questions:

1-What do I have to do to get the computer to stop recognizing this program and stop those error messages?

2-Do I have to add something new for the Logitech mouse in WIN.INI to replace mitsumi or leave it alone and it's fine?

3-In the win.ini file it still says the following:

MouseTrails=-1
DoubleClickSpeed=474
SwapMouseButtons=0

Are those related to the error messages I am getting? Should those be removed from the WIN.INI or are those part of logitech now and stay in there?

I obviously don't have much experience with WIN.INI and would appreciate the guidance.

I was able to try the autoexec.bat section again and remove the reference to the mitsumi mouse and re-boot and the error message is gone.

All set! See how helpful this forum is? A week ago I wouldn't have known how to do this at all!

Fine, you've fixed it!

Just wondered (historically) if there was some installed software for your previous mouse?

If so it would have been better to have looked for a provided uninstall, or in the Control Panel/Add-Remove. This would have removed any registry entries at the same time.

It is best to avoid picking off files and folders. This approach should only be used as a last resort because there is no proper uninstall elsewhere. Just deleting folders and files can lead to instbility (apart from ones you have put there yourself).

Dear Derek:

Thanks for following up.

I did look in add/remove programs first and mitsumi wasn't listed...

Still, it's good to be reminded to always check there first.

FYI, I got an answer to my NAV issue directly from Symantec. If you are interested to see what they had to say, it is message # 112585.

Thanks again for your help.
