I have just had to replace my modem with a Dynamode smart V92 fax modem. It is unbelievable slow, taking two hours to download a 2.5 MB file.which my old modem downloaded in approx 20 mins. The check program which came with the new one says everthing is ok and I have checked through the previous 10 pages of FAQs and tried the suggestions for slow downloads and nothing has changed. I am lucky if the modem reaches 1.0 bits/sec. Could the modem be faulty? Could someone please advise me.

Jeez, even 20 minutes is awful slow. Is your phone line kinda noisy?

That is really bad! I run an old 486, and it does better than that! When you get online, what speed does it log on at? My phone lines are very noisy, yet I usually can get on at 42,666, or so. If you are only getting on at, 19,200, it will be very slow. But, yes, it could be a faulty modem, too. I use DAP for my downloads, and usually this gives me around 5 to 6 Kb/sec or better. I, too, have tried everything under the sun to speed it up, but so far nothing helps, not even the so-called net boosters. Good luck!

Another thing, In all my years I had heard to match your Modems chip to that of your ISP. This year, since moving my office to another county, I have had to sign up with another ISP for work. This new ISP provides slow and virtually useless connects with Lucent chip modems which work well at home but flies through with Rockwell chip modems and vice-versa. See if your ISP will tell you what Chipset they are using in their server and what is compatible, then use only modems with chipsets that are compatible. Also, avoid any modem with Conextant chips, in my experience, they seem to be the worst with any ISP.

hi it's christine again. All the comments are much appreciated and with a bit of tweaking I have increased my download times a little but still no where near the speed of my old 33.* modem. My ISPS both support v90 and our Telephone line is problem free. Any other suggestions from anyone.
