help!!! please!
I traded my desktop in for a laptop due to moving to Mexico City, (shipping is expensive) But this is a 3gz, NEC, with WIndows 98, and it had a bunch of previous programs pn it, and one is called FAT32 drive converter,
I have internet explorer, and it runs very slow and freezes. I have probley 10 messgs a day that say, illegal operation performed by misc programs,
I wanted to deleate all and start again but no disc came with it. So can anyone help me make what I have work?
WHen I run scan disc it says, error on Fat32, two files which should be identical are not. And It says Fat32 converter cannot be uninstalled.?? I am so lost at this point I am ready to scream. I know a little bit about pc, but I am not able to understand all the problems that seem to go with this laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS I scanned for viruses, trojans ect. nothing.
just freezing, error messages and not operating correctly,

The FAT32 drive converter is part of Win98. You'll have to buy Win98 because you really need to format and reload -- no way around it. You should also save all the drivers to disk -- even if copying floppies is a hassle, because drivers for laptop devices can be hard to find, even on the manufacturer's website.

i have a way of re-installing windows 98, but will only work if you have a second hard drive or access to a cd-burner.

there should be a folder in the windows directory --> c:\windows\options\cabs

In this folder all the setup files for windows 98 in there.
just copy them to a cd or second harddrive if possible.

you will now need toget the produck key for it. you will need to take a trip to the registry for this. open the run command window -start >run. type regedit and click ok.

browse down to --> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version and scroll down to the produck key entry. make a note of this and dont lose it.

now create a boot disk and you should be able to boot from the disk format your drive and then reinstall windows from a cd or the sencond hard drive. email me is you have any other questions me_iknoweverything@msn.com

A last resort to save what you have on your
computer, is if I send you Norton Speed Disk
and Norton Disk Doctor (small files)if you
E-mail me. I'm not sure this will do any good
as I read that "If the second copy of the FAT
can't be read , that its a critical error."
You might have to do the re-install method
after all.

I'll answer for taxi , Teresa.
This only if you can enter Safe Mode,
because I believe it's a Win98 feature.
Start / Help / System File Checker
It checks your important system files.
Hope you get it running.

Hi,
I used Norton Win Doctor, and it said error on boot drive.
It asked repair? I said yes, it said reboot. I did. My pc would not load up at all. I had to reformat drive C:/, I lost everything. I think it rewrote the partition because I could not access c:/ even with a boot disc.
I did buy a win98 start-up disc, nothing but basics on it. to get my pc up and running but anything like Norton I lost, and here in Mexico all is hard to find, especially english versions.
anything you can send would be appreciated.
Thanks again for all the help.
Sincerely yours,
Teresa
ps. I tried to email but the email link would not work.
