I have a new laptop and the screen fades to black. What could it be? If it were a computer I'd check the video card and monitor. What do I check on a laptop. It's a HP ZE5200

haha! Now if you know just say so. I'm asking for help not sarcasm. I'm not real familiar with laptops as I am pcs and I am asking for help. Anyone know about laptops video problems?
Bob was telling it like it is dwin. The video adapter is probably built into the motherboard and you can't swap out the LCD. I guess you could check for a loose cable if you feel comfortable taking the laptop apart. But that's a real long shot.

dwin, taking apart the laptop will probably void your warranty.
Does this happen randomly, or could it be part of the laptop's power management? I'm not familiar with your particular laptop, but mine will turn off the display after a predetermined amount of idle time, to help conserve battery power.
Power management features can be accessed & changed via Control Panel.
Dwin, yes I was giving a little sarcasm, but I also spoke the truth. If the machine is new, then I assume it's under warranty and probably best to have it factory serviced.

Hi dwin,
Just a thought here...
I do realise it's not handy, especially when you want to take the laptop with you it would even be impossible, but for testing...
Have you tried to connect a normal monitor to the laptop? If the problem would persist, then it's most likely a videocard problem.
Good luck.
