It prints to screen :-
This is driver is provided by Oak Technologies

Usually, if the disk light stays on for any length of time (not flashing like when it's reading), then the area of the disk the computer is searching is either bad, or the installation program cannot interpret the data stored there.

You might try going to library or internet cafe and downloading a boot floppy, making sure to get one with cd-rom support.

You can get one from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

At point that it hangs , the comp is not reading the CD at all, you don't even need a cd in drive.
You may need a different cd driver , floppy diskett is bad, cd drive is bad, or cable not connected good. Mybe bios setup is wrong. Master /slave jumpers are not set right on hdd or cd drive. Could also be you need a 80wire IDE cable and you are useing a 40wire cable. Sure there are other items left out for cause of problem.

You might go into bois setup and change first boot device to CD. The win98se cd might be bootable, some are some are not.

The typical bootdisk loads alot of drivers that aren't needed. Occasionally this will cause some computers to hang. Post back your email address and I'll send you a bootdisk that only loads himem.sys and the cdrom driver.

Also post back the size of the new drive.

when the CD is inserted, like flashes a few times and then glows steady.
got a floppy from bootdisk.com. As same files as my existingW98se floppy boot diskand it hangs at the same point. Very useful site though.

I have waited........and waited.....and waited.
Floppy disk okay
tables okay
jumpers on existing CD haven't been changed.
Jumpers okay on hard disk. I can see the hard disk if I'd choose 98 to start without CD support.
I have tried to changing the BIOS to boot from the CD but this fails.
I have got a copy of CD-ROM God but I'm not sure how to change the drivers for the CD on my W98se floppy.
I'm beginning to think the CD is 'Kaput'.

Thanks to you all for your help.
Len

The problem is not with the cdrom drivers on the bootdisk. They're loading OK. It's what's attempting to load afterwards that's causing the problem.

I just sent you a bootdisk file with minimal drivers. Run the file and it will create a bootdisk. Then give it a try.

Yeah, if the bootdisk I sent didn't work then obviously the drivers loading from the typical disk weren't the problem.

I'd suspect the cd drive itself is not the problem either. Usually you'll get a message about the drivers loading or not loading--it won't just hang there. And it does appear the drivers loaded OK.

I recall sometimes a hanging affect if a cd is in the cdrom. When there's no disk in the drive does it still hang?

maybe a bad IDE cable ? if a wire is broken correct data would not be received and sent by cd drive.

new Sony cd rw
My existing boot disks stiil not working so tried your disk and BINGO- it worked. I now have the machine back with W98 up and running.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Now the question is nagging me - what is the difference between the two discs?. Any idea where I can find a step by step explanation of what is happening during the proces of bootup from the floppy? where are the drivers picked up and in what file names.
I tried to use another driver by copying another driver which seemed to work on to the floppy and giving it the same name ( changing the old drivers name of course) but the substitution didnt work.
Any way thanks a lot.

We're glad you got it going.

The typical bootdisk contains three cdrom drivers to accomodate the majority of cdroms. The oakcdrom.sys driver is the IDE cdrom driver. Btcdrom.sys is a Mylex and Bus Logic SCSI driver and Aspicd.sys is an Adaptec SCSI driver. Only one of these drivers should load. But even on a regular IDE system, there are several other aspi files that load from the bootdisk even though there's no SCSI cdrom. I had a problem like yours with one system and found that it would boot OK if I disabled the loading of everything except himem.sys (for memory management) and oakcdrom.sys.

It seems to be a rare occurance. I was just thinking it could be due to bad RAM. Or maybe it's just some hardware idiosyncrasy.

Hey... I'm having the same exact problem with my older Dell laptop.

DAVEINCAPS, if you're still reading this board, can you pass along that copy of the bootdisk?

Thanks.
