Comment:

Good evening all,

Just discovered that 'Intermutes' has taken over 'CW Shredder' and also put out a new version (2.0).

I just downloaded the new version with no problem but when I went to install it ...zilch-o! Nothing happened!

For the record, I am still a Windows 95 user and I experienced this same problem with Ad-Aware's new SE program. With the help of others a work-a-round was discovered so I could run SE on my machine.

Just curious if any other Win95ers are having the same problem while trying to install the new CW Shredder 2.0 version?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Just for you Phil, I downloaded CWS v2.0 - I'd been reading about it over in S&V the other day

Attempted to install on a 95B system - it complained about not having OLEACC.DLL - providing the file from a 98 machine stopped that message, and gave rise to the (not unexpected) OLEACC.DLL is linked to missing export... yadda yadda. So, fine - it will not install on 95.

Just like Ad-aware though, once installed on a 98 system, it can be transferred to a 95 machine, and seems to work ok. I had it 'scan only' without incident.

Doesn't appear to impact the registry at all. If you like, I can send you the EXE - actually two files were installed - CWShredder.exe & IMReport.exe

Hi jboy,

I had a feeling it was going to be another work-a-round.

I really appreciate you taking the time to download and try it out.

If you have the time I would love to get a copy of it so I could try it on my Win95a.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

No problemo - the other file (imreport) appears to work along the lines of HJT! - it, however, does not seem to work with 95, so we won't bother with it.

Hi jboy,

Got it, installed it and used it. Working fine. I really appreciate the extra effort.

Where there are 'friends' there is always a way!

I'm off to the sack now. I am trying to catch up on some missed sleep from the Yankee-Red Sox baseball playoffs.

Thanks and regards,

My pleasure Phil.

Really wonder why an installer is even needed, but it is good to know the fight against CoolWebSearch continues, and 95 users aren't (quite) left out.

While it isn't all inclusive, but what is, I did stumble on this site while looking for some spyware removal tool for win 95.
www.spywareguide.com on the left side you will see online scan. Might be worth a look!

If you are interested in Prevx ask about it in the S&V forum. It might be brilliant but some proggies are not (or even contain spyware).

It said free download but not freeware. Did you suss out whether it has to be purchased?

Hi Derek.W,

Haven't really checked out the site mentioned in response #7 at this time. Planned on looking at it later.

I take it you are telling me to 'walk softly but carry a big stick'?

Yep, that's about right LOL.

There are a stack of rogue spyware fixers out there. Best to stick to the ones recommended around these parts, or check out the unknowns. This website is useful (haven't checked Prevx):

Hi Derek.W,

Thanks for the quick post and also for the list of 'Rogues'. I added that one to my 'favorites list.

I have posted on the Security and Virus forum as you recommended and I am on my way there right now as I was just notified I have an answer.

Thanks and regards,

Suzi's list is required reading.

Spywareguide isn't specifically listed as one of 'the good guys', but more importantly, they're not listed as one of the baddies

"There are several excellent anti-spyware scanners available -- some free, some for pay. These include (but are not limited to)" etc etc

Looks like an interesting site - the scan is free, their product list consists of Security 'Name' applications - don't think they actually have anything of their own (based on my brief lookaround)

Hi jboy,

Thanks for coming aboard. Like I just told Derek.W I have also posted on the Security and Virus forum to see if anyone else has had any negative experiences with the site.

From what I have seen on Google it seems to be an up and up site. It sure looks like it is loaded with information about the 'baddies'.

As usual your comments, like Derek.W and the other regulars, are always most welcome and appreciated.

Got to get some 'shut-eye' now.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Re CWShredder 2.0

Have a look at this:

SUSPICIONS

The suspicion is that this new version is scumware and removes various advert entries in you host file (if you have one). Many reports about it removing so called CWS.HiddenDll which I got too.

I'm not taking sides but for now I will restore my backed up hosts file and revert back to CWShredder 1.59.1 (link to this on above link).

Can't hang around (visitors) but can someone please check to see if S&V forum know any thing about this.

Thx

Derek.W

Hi all

There was some suspicion and concern in S&V when the product first surfaced (see link in #1) but so far nothing negative there.

Just ran a scan with it under 98SE - - nothing to report. Although I'm not fanatically obsessive about keeping a 'clean machine', I do periodically run A-A SE, HJT! & Spybot, and usually forgo IE & OE - and, believe me, I occasionally visit some pretty, er, questionable sites when trying to track down info.

Remember, this is a fairly specific tool, unlike the others. Still, well worth keeping an eye on since it hasn't (in this incarnation) been around that long.

Hi jboy and Derek.W,

Thanks for the updates and your thoughts on the new CW Shredder 2.0 version. I ran it too and all seemed okay.

I guess the 'proof in the pudding' will be when someone is unlucky enough to latch on to one of the 'CoolWebSearch' baddies. Then we will see if this new version is as effective at getting rid of them as the initial release.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

What bothers me is that now, first time for ages, I'm getting adverts popping up on the internet. I've not checked but sure as eggs it has taken out a chunk from my hosts file (as a poster reported on that link).

IF (and only if) there is any basis behind these suspicions what worries me is "what else is the blatant acceptance of installing an exe file likely to lead to" (silly me). It really could be anything unless someone reverse engineers it to see what it really does.

I'm left in a quandry. Do I just run with it (new adverts and all) or rip it promptly out of my system and restore my hosts file?

Decisions decisions LOL

Didn't do anything to mine - it's still blocking those annoying intellitxt adverts ; )

Time to play detective, but I would start by replacing the HOSTS file - sure.

Unfortunately I hadn't got an exact copy of my previous hosts file.

However I have experimented with various hosts files and thrown CWShredder at the system. I found no sign of any change to any hosts file nor did I get any further reports about CWS.HiddenDll

The sudden appearance of adverts may just have been a function of visiting different websites to usual - a coincidence.

Rightly or wrongly, on the basis of what I've tried I could find no evidence of any hokey pokey from CWShredder 2.0

Whether CWS.HiddenDll was a false postive (deliberate or otherwise) is purely a matter of conjecture. Despite my "over the top" security something could somehow have crept in and has now been properly removed by CWS.

I feel obliged to give CWShredder 2.0 a clean bill of health on the basis of my own particular experiments.

Aha jboy. It's the "no smoke without fire syndrome" (which is often wrong). It's just that by the time I'd finished reading that link in my #16 it seemed they'd about crucified it.

I'm keeping it on my machine, if it turns into an elephant I'll let you know (if I can).

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Years back there used to be a fairground game where there were these linked ducks that moved to and fro, the object being to throw the ball into one of their open beaks.

This picture often springs to mind when I see one person following the next without any really good reason. Most political parties, clubs, religions and cults have this syndrome.

Very easy to fall into this trap rather than keeping open minded ....

Hi Matt and Derek.W,

Sorry for the delay in answering. I have been busy uninstalling and then reinstalling Spybot 1.3. For one reason or the other my Spybot scans were taking anywhere from 55-58 minutes to complete. With the new install I have cut it down to around 20 minutes which isn't too shabby for my old 'warhorse'.

Thanks for taking care of Matt in my absence Derek.W. If I can be of any further assistance just let me know.

Thanks and regards,

Phil
