New Ad-Aware says DAP is spyware!

I just ran CNet's CatchUp program which said my Ad-Aware had a recent update.

I downloaded it and ran it. It uninstalled Download Accelerator Plus for being Spyware.

I have run Ad-Aware in a just prior version that did not detect DAP as being that, but this latest version does.

So I removed DAP which saddens me, because I have gotten used to it and enjoyed it's many cool download functions.

DOES Anybody know of a good replacement that splits, speeds up downloads and resumes partial downloads if the server fails, etc. That is Not spyware?

Thanks,
HC

HC,

Found it very odd that Ad-Aware would remove a program such as DAP so I ran my RefUpdate for AdAware and download DAP.

Ran AdAware and it found nothing.

What exactly was in the log?

Good Day!

I have download accelerator ver 5.0.0.1 and also ad-ware ver 5.7 with refUpdate but ad-ware has not detected the download accelerator.
Works very well.

Derek,

Does sound as if AdAware has gotten a little buggy.

Happy,

Don't believe that DAP is spyware. It may contain some Adware but an updated AdAware on my PC did not.

If I liked the program enough that it "saddens" me to see it go because of Adware I would ignore the finding for the program by AdAware and continue using it.

Good Day All!

In their privacy policy, DAP explicitly state that they collect user information:-
..SpeedBit may gather contact information and other personally identifiable information (such as username, e-mail address, password, country and zip- code), and demographic information (like their age, occupation or gender). SpeedBit its partners, affiliates or other third parties may use any information submitted or collected from you

Ad-aware 5.71 (build 2898) removed DAP.

A day or two later, Ad-aware issued a new reflist for 5.71 that ignored DAP because Ad-aware had difficulty distinguishing the DAP free version from the paid version.

Now Ad-aware releases a separated downloadable program for those who want to remove DAP.

This thread at Ad-aware's forum explained the situation:
http://www.lavasoft.nu/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?s=3ccdd5780d2fffff;act=ST;f=2;t=140;st=0

I once used DAP. What disturbs me most is DAP collected my username, email address and password.

Well, it was Ad-Aware's latest version 5.71.

But I don't know which version of DAP it was(maybe 4 months old?).

I liked it, and will try installing it and testing it again. Maybe it was because DAP was "activated" and in my task tray on lower right(but it found about 40 DAP files it identified as Spyware).

I guess I'll reinstall DAP and run the scan again, but not have DAP activated in the tast tray and see what it says.

BUT, does anybody have another free "accelerator/splitter" for downloading that they like(that resumes)???

Jon K,

Well that certainly explains why I downloaded the free version and AdAware did not detect nor delete anything.

Happy Camper, Go to the Ad-aware Download link below my name and download Ad-aware 5.8 which was just released today. Your DAP problems will be gone. The reason that you were having the problem is because the particular version and reflist.sig file that you downloaded was buggy. They corrected the problem within a couple of days by releasing a new reflist.sig file which if you would have downloaded and unzipped it to your C:\Programs\Lavasoft Ad-aware folder it would not have shown DAP as ADWARE\SPYWARE.
Hope this helps.

Try something, Mesich(if you don't mind)

Download CNet's CatchUp and see if it tells you there is an Update for your Ad-Aware.

I did and was surprised because I had just updated my Ad-Aware about 2 weeks ago. But apparently when you do the CatchUp, it finds the 5.71 latest version which detects DAP as Spyware(my DAP was free version too)

If it really IS spyware, I don't want it on my computer.

Again, does anybody have another speed(free)downloader that isn't gathering info that they like?

Hey HC, I have the older version of the DA program. Called DA3.5. Basic download accelerator version 3.5. Does the job you want it to without all that garbage on it. Derek will vouch for it. I sent it to him when he found out the newer version had alot of extras that wern't really needed. You can find it at my site on the Downloads page, look under older downloads at the bottom of the page. It will be listed as: Download Accelerator 3.5.

Terri,
Is that the version that puts the unfinished "resume" downloads on your desktop?

I know the latest version had more bells and whisles(Sp?), but I actually liked them and didn't like all the extra icons for unfinished downloads.

Is that the version that did that?

Happy,

I would try that out but I have already used Tufenuf's link and downloaded ver.5.8

Sorry can't help you with a different speed downloader as I don't use one.

I would check out Terri's Page myself.

Thanks for the link Tufenuf.

Good Day All!

HC that is the nice thing I like about it. You can cancel the download yourself or if your connection gets lost it will ask you if you want to resume it later? That is the main feature I like. Also it does not have to be saved to your desktop. You can go into the DA configuration and configure it to go into any folder. I set it up to go to a folder of: D:\downloads. That way it is away from my O/S and programs so if I crash and haven't had a chance to back up I don't loose my downloads. Would I steer you wrong? Come on now. You better know you can trust me.
And hey have you checked out your page yet? Wanted to know what you thought about it. Drop me a line, but not now I'm going to bed. Have to work tomorrow.

Yes Terri, I know I can trust you friend.

But the latest version of DAP does that too. That also is one of the reasons I like it(if the download server fails, you don't have to start all over on a large download, just pick up at 80%, or where ever you were when it failed)
I emailed you. I'm curious why you prefer the older version though(it doesn't have as many options, like virus scans, and others, etc)

Thanks Tufenuf, I too(like Mesich) downloaded Ad-Aware's version 8 released yesterday(newer than the buggy one CNet offers as "the most recent" one.) It works better and didn't object to DAP as Spyware. I can live with Adware, but not spyware. I'm glad you told us all about the version 8 just released.

You and the others here are always on top of things and I appreciate it.

Thanks again.
Now "Happy"...again(with DAP)
