I am trying to set up two machines in a network. Each one sees itself on the net work, but neither one will see the other. I have this set up with equipment I have used in the past and worked. One pc is running win98 se the other is running win95. Can't figure out what I am not doing now that I did before.

Thanks

Don't remove all the protocals. If you do and you have to reboot of course, now windows is going to ask for every single driver all over again. And belive me I had a really hard time configuring my 3com Etherlink III ISA card on my win98SE [main] machine. Went right in on my [client] machine. This same thing happened to me last night. I could see myself by not the other machine, on both machines. I exited out of network neighborhood and then checked all my cables. I have a straight through cable running from 3com card in pc1 to a palmhub and another straight through cable running from pc2 3com card into palmhub. I unplugged and reseated all cables, went back into network neigborhood and both machines were in both machines again.

I just want to network the two together, not interested in internet connection shareing.
was just looking for information that may help me track down the problem. Thought this might be easier than doing a search and haveing to go thru 1000 diff sites to find what you want.

If you're directly connecting two computers you need a CROSSOVER cable versus a STRAIGHT-THRU cable.

Just a thought.....

Have you got "File & Printer Sharing" enabled in the Network Properties window ?

Also, have you (for each machine) set the "Sharing" properties.

EG. If you go into Windows Explorer or My Computer and right click on one of the drives, then click on "Sharing"

In there you can set that particular drive to be "Shared As"

Click on "Apply"

Repeat the process for both PC's

You may need to re-start but you should then be able to see the other PC in your Network Neighbourhood.

I've done quite a bit of networking stuff for people and have often found this to be the cause - simply that they haven't set the drives to be shared !!

Hope this helps, but please e-mail me if you require further assistance.

Regards

Simon.

Have done all that has been suggested. I think I will just go and buy a new cable maybe it is damaged somewhere that I can't see. Thanks for all the help
