I am trying to transfer the data over from my old windows 95 pc to one with XP Pro. The windows 95 machine is part of my office network of 3 computers, so it has a network card. I have hooked these two up using a crossover cable and tried to use the Transfer Wizard, but so far, it hasn't worked. I have setup both machines with IP address's (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2) and pinged them from both machines, and all is recognized. The 95 machine also recognizes the XP's "name", but the XP doesn't recognize the 95's "name" when pinging. Also, from start/run, neither recognizes the others "name". I have turned off all the firewalls and now I'm stuck. Please help.

This is probably because you have not change the workgroup names to match. The default name on 95 is different from XP.

I always find it faster and easier to temporarly install the old drive into the new computer.

I made sure to name the workgroup the same in the new pc. I am beginning to think about doing as you said, hooking up the old drive into the new computer, but that seems more complicated than hooking up each computer with a cable and transfering the data over.

Before I do that, any more suggestions?

Did you enable file sharing & share the C:\ drive (or at least the folders containing the files you want to transfer) on the Win95 PC?

What error message do you get when trying to explore My Network Places on the Win XP PC?

Try making a User name and password on XP computer then making same user name and password on 95 computer. Restart 95 computer and logon with that user name and pass.

Like dave said enable file sharing by selecting network neighborhood right click properties. Make sure you have file and printer sharing icon and at least file sharing checked. Also TCP/IP.

If you have gotten at least one computer to ping and get a responce to the other you are on the right track. It's just a setting issue now.

To find the 95 computer on the XP machine sometimes you may have to click View Workgroup Computers and drop down to Entire Network.

Certainly you'll want to resolve this interesting networking problem, however if you just want to transfer data, you can install winzip, and any of the IM packages, and if you setup two unique accounts you can send yourself the data. It will take longer to zip than to send. I send 3GB files regularly. Your only size limitation should be the extra disc you have to bucket redundant copies of data. Not elegant - but highly effective.
