Below are my problems and the follow ups I've received. I have cat 5 cable already installed RJ-45 conectors(100feet)The hub activity lights come on when pc's are booted,both pc's shows itself in network neighborhood but not shown on the other pc's network neighborhood. I took both pc's to tech and had cards installed at which time they worked.However when I brought home,windows found other things that were not connected at the tech shop (printer ,scanner,handheld,external isdn adapter) and installed drivers,it's never worked since.So I thought win98SE would answer my prayers, Formatted and clean install.And with no other programs installed it still took 2 1/2-3 min to bootup with win98se only. Is it possible BIOS needs reconfigured? M.B. is an ABIT BH6. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL THE HELP!!pat

PREVIOUS POST AND REPLY BELOW.
I have ISDN I would love to share with my other win98se pc. I have tried (25-30 hours minimum) everything (that I can understand) but had no luck. I drilled holes ran cat5 cable connected the 2 pc's with hub. If I find instructions it tells me to get this setting or that setting from NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR!!!!!! I'm supposed to be the net admin. Ha! Ha! As stated below all i'm looking for is 2 pc's sharing my printer and ISDN terminal. Thanks for all the help everyone has been trying to give but guess the old scull is a little thick these days.
One last thing, pc#1 HD was formated before clean win98se. It just seems like there is some old settings hiding somewhere.BELOW is copy of original post-n-reply
I have 2 pc's running win98se. I CANT get network up. pc #1 pen 11-350 pc #2 pen200mmx
Have Intel nic's 82557 10/100 (almost positive)in both pc's Yet win98se and intel's own program show both as Pro/100+. Ive tried using both win98 drivers pro and 8257 10/100 and also intels drivers both pro and 82577 10/100. They are conected thru Linksys 5-port autosensing hub.The most I can see is my side of network from my pc and the same for the other pc only the side from the pc im on at the time. Win98SE will NOT auto configure modem sharing with out a good network connection.I've tried all protocals together,mixed and individually. 10base-t cable.Also while i'm beggin can anyone help in the configuration of these protocals (Coalesce Buffers,duplex mode,receive buffers,transmit control blocks,802.1p/802.1g tagging,enhanced mode 32/16 ect.ect.)THANKS!!

Am I correct in assuming you only have 2 PC's in your network?
If not, please post again.
If so, here is a setup for your PC's which should have you up and running:
First, go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab. If the network adapter doesn't have a yellow exclamation point (!) you're ready to install your netork.
PC#1
Network Icon in control panel
Configuration tab
Client = Client for Microsoft Networks
Adapter = (adapter detected by Win98)
Protocol = NetBEUI
Service = File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Identification tab
Computer name = PC1
Workgroup = PatsNetwork

PC#2
Network Icon in control panel
Configuration tab
Client = Client for Microsoft Networks
Adapter = (adapter detected by Win98)
Protocol = NetBEUI
Service = File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Identification tab
Computer name = PC2
Workgroup = PatsNetwork

Most people (including me) use TCP/IP, but NetBEUI is easier to configure - the choice is yours.
After rebooting, open Network Neighborhood and wait a minute or so. Press the F5 key. You should now see both computers.
If you need more info see:

or post again, if problems arise.

Patflan,
Personally, unless you plan on wiring stuff all over your house, I prefer the BNC/COAX connections. Their simple, don't need a hub, don't need a crossover cable but, will cause headaches when something with the cable or connectors goes bad and may be alittle slower (not sure about this one).

Anyway, if you have the capability to connect via BNC/COAX and T connectors and Terminators(not your Arnold Schwarzenegger(sp) type), I would go that route first. That way you don't have to question whether the RJ-45 cable's are bad or is the hub connection not right or even if the hub is working at all. Try it with BNC first between both computers if it works than at least you know the cards are good and your network settings are correct. Then connect one computer to the hub via BNC and the other via RJ-45. If that doesn't work, then you know it is either the hub or the cable or the connections between the computer-RJ45-HUB side of the house.

It sounds like you have all the settings correct. Hope this helps some. Also, if the two computers are more than 180ft or so apart, the BNC or COAX connection may or may not work. I've been able to squeak out about 220ft in a tactical environment.

Regards,

Fox

Check the bottom of your previous post for more info.

You may have a confict between your network card and another device. Check Start\settings\control panel\device manager on both machines. If the network adapter has an exclamation point on it then this is the source of the problem.

remove all protocols from your adapters except TCP/IP. Set individual IP addresses for your home network and leave the ISDN card alone.
(I use 169.254.0.xx for my home network)

get a proxy program to run on the main PC

Tell your laptop to access the proxy as a gateway. (all these settings are in start/control panel/network/select the card)

DON"T use Internet connection sharing built into 98SE as it changes the IP addresses on the fly and stuffs the network.

Proxies like wingate are good (buyware) or something like analogX is freeware. (analogX doesn't do ICQ and the like)

Try also.... start/programs/msdos prompt

then ping the IP addresses of the other PC's and see if you get a response.

Finally (do this first....) reboot your laptop while it is connected to the hub. Sometimes the suspend function stops the laptop entering hte network properly.
