I have two computers, one a desktop the other a laptop with docking station. both are running Windows 98 second edition. I recently purchase two EA201 network cards and have a EN108 hub. I followed the setup guidelines and the two see themselves in Network neighbourhood, but don't see each other.
I have tried all the troubleshooting guides and it didn't help
I tried to run net diag which failed.

What do I do now??

I'm sure you've already checked, but it's necessary to go through the obvious stuff:

1. First check Device Manager to make sure that the NIC driver is working. If your NICs came with a diagnostic utility, then use this as well.

2. Make sure each PC has the following installed:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- TCP/IP (easier to troubleshoot than NetBEUI, make sure TCP/IP is only one installed)
- File and Print Sharing for MS Networks (make sure Browse Master is set to auto on both, or enabled on 1 and auto on the other.)

Each PC must also have the same Workgroup name, and a different Computername.

3. Configure TCP/IP on each PC as follows:

Computer#1
- IP Address = 192.168.0.10
- Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

Computer#2
- IP Address = 192.168.0.11
- Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

4. If after 15 minutes, you can't see the other machine in NetHood, troubleshoot using PING

To see if TCP/IP has installed correctly, try:
PING 127.0.0.1
(if invalid replies, remove TCP/IP, reboot, then reinstall TCP/IP)

To see if NIC is working properly:
PING [IP address of PC you're on]
(If invalid replies, but PINGing 127.0.0.1 gave valid replies, NIC is not working properly.)

If these both give valid replies, it is probably your cable(s) or your hub that are causing the problem. If you can, replace them (one at a time) with hardware that is known to work. Test for connectivity by PINGing the IP of the other PC (this is equivalent to the "net diag" test which uses NetBEUI.)

Make sure you are using a crossover patch cable if there is no hub between the two PC's
