Go to Windows Explorer and click Desktop and there you will see the Netwk Neigh folder, I do not recommend you delete this folder but try to Cut & Paste it to another folder and then try to see it you can delete the icon.

Or just drag it to the Recycle Bin.

Hi karena

If you are confident about going into the Registry, then you can hide the NetHood icon with a simple edit.

Run REGEDIT

Go to these two keys...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look for NoNetHood on the right hand screen.
Right click and choose MODIFY.
Change the value data to 1

Hi Krystyna, karena, PCFreak, Dave357 and all,

First, I apologize to 'karena'for jumping into her thread, but it has sparked my 62-year-old grey matter's curiousity as I was surfing the forum.

I did a dry run on Krystyna's recommendation. However, when I got to the actual Modify part I got 'cold feet'.

Once I had right clicked on 'NoNetHood' and selected 'Modify' the 'Value Data' screen came up and I was lost.

Mine was all 0's too just as Krystyna said. However, I didn't know which ones to change to 1's.

Under 'Value data' my screen looks like this:

0000 (blinking cursor) 00 00 00 00

Where I have inserted (blinking cursor) it is exactly that, my cursor.

Would I change all the 0's to 1's or just some of them.

And, am I correct in assuming that if I ever wanted to bring back the Network Neighborhood icon on my desktop, I would just reverse the procedure?

Any imput would be appreciated as I am always trying to learn.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Hi Phil

The format of the number will need to be changed to 0000 01 00 00 00

You will note that the first 4 zeros cannot be changed.
Put your curser between the 4 zeros and the first 00
Then you can delete the 00 00 00 00 and type
01 00 00 00

And yes, to bring the NetHood icon back again, you would re-modify the number to
0000 00 00 00 00

Regards
Krystyna

Hi Krystyna,

Appreciate you coming back with a most informative answer ... but then, I wouldn't expect anything less from you judging from all your previous posts.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it in detail for an 'old geezer' like myself. It is much appreciated.

Have a great weekend and once again thanks for helping to make mine,

Regards,

Phil

Hi Phil, everyone

re: TweakUI - to install it, go to whatever directory that it's unpacked itself, look for an INF file - rightclick that and choose install.

It's one of M$'s better toys.

hi krystyna, phil, jboy

first of all, thanks for helping, krystyna, and phil, no, it's ok put have some feedback, and i'm sure we all appreciate it too...

by the way, since i was doing some research myself.....i looked up under 'search' and looked up some previous threads....i found a few similar ones but they all touch on the registry subject, which i am not too keen myself. however, one of those posts, i looked up and it suggested to the other user to go to control panel> network settings>
and then just remove 'client for microsoft networks', then i had to reboot and yep, the icon for 'network neighbourhood' disappeared too....
and i followed a check using your 'regedit' check too, krystyna.....
and like phil, i was a bit confused too.....
H_KEY_CURRENT USER
Default: value not set
Perfect Fit Logical: <>

H_KEY_LOCAL MACHINE
Default: value not set

This is what i have now in the registry,
so, does this mean i'm ok and need not set any values?

and yes, jboy, i did look for the INF file, but to install, it asked for a 'disk' for it, which i have no idea what that is though.

any feedback is appreciated,

thank u all kindly.

Hi krystyna, karena, PCFreak, Dave357, jboy and all,

I just tried Krystyna's recommendation and it worked like a charm. I successfully got rid of and then retored the Network Neighborhood icon from and to my desktop.

However, I did notice that when I went to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

that it was just as Kyrstyna said it would be.

However, when I went to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

and clicked on 'Policies' I didn't get Explorer, the only two choices I had were NETWORK and RATINGS.

Like I said it is no big thing since I was able to successfully delete the Network Neighborhood icon from my desktop and then restore it using Kyrstyna's recommendation.

I am just kind of curious as to why the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE didn't show the 'NoNetHood' value.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

I think that you can just choose the folder that it's unpacked to.

It's been a while since I've had occasion to install TweakUI, but, as I recall, the exe file just unpacks the files to whatever folder that you launch it from - don't be confused by the term 'disk' - that can mean your hard disk as well.

Hope I'm not blowin' smoke ; )

It's a pretty useful proggie though, well worth installing.

Usually TweakUI tries to put it's files in the folder "C:\Windows\Temp". From there, as jboy mentioned, you would right-click the file "tweakui.inf", and click "Install". If it's asking for a disk, you should be able to just click browse and point it to that "C:\Windows\Temp" folder, or whereever you extracted the files.

Anyway, it sounds like you've already gotten the problem taken care of, but you may still want to add TweakUI as long as you've downloaded it, which would make it easier to add the icon back if you needed it, along with having several other useful features.

Hi karena

No need for you to do anything in the Registry now, as you have removed your icon successfully.

Hi Phil

No worries about not having a duplicate entry for NoNetHood.
HKCU is for the settings of the "current" user.
HKLM is for the overall settings of the computer on a "default" basis.
Sometimes both keys may be affected by a change, sometimes not...so one always looks at both, just to be thorough !
