Hey all,
My network neighborhood icon has disappeared from the desktops of one of my computers. i had a problem with policy settings and could not alter the registry, so I formatted and reinstalled.
Everything is fine except that the icon doesn't come up - which is a problem as the comp needs to browse the network.
I have set the network settings for "Client for Microsoft Networks", I have added absolutely EVERY program windows might need. I just read the tweakUI won't do this with 98se.
SO can someone please help me!?
Thanks,
SKYE

its real hard to say from here what the problem is.
make sure your drivers are loaded
and settings are correct.a work around might be if you know the computer name type or make a shortcut.
\\the computer name
or I guess you could use find too.

Everything is right. There are 19 other computers in the room, with the exact some hardware and software - think computer lab at a school. I have installed all the drivers.
Everything installed perfectly. I mean, I'll reinstall again if nothing else works, but its driving me crazy.
I've checked all of the hardware. There aren't any conflicts, the machine is identical now in settings to the ones sitting next to it.
I'm just out of ideas.
I've set up all the network settings in the network control panel. They're exactly what they used to be, right down to the workgroup and IP address.
It won't see the network, so searching for "//comp name" isn't going to work.
WHat I am thinking is that maybe a file DIDN'T install correctly, it's just not showing up as not being there.
Does anyone know what the required files are for network neighborhood? I would assume that they would be located in the system or system32 folders?
Thanks again!
Skye

check the device manager to make sure your nic is listed
check network connections
a physical break could explain alot.also you might try powering down the system totally / unplug to drain the power out off the nic.
my thinking is that this just disappeared the first time.
then when you reinstalled it still doesn't work.
sounds like it might be a physical problem.

OK,
SI have have the icon back now - I had to reinstall a lot of stuf before it happened - thank god for the recovery disk if u ask me.
But now I can't access the network.
Itz a TCP/IP network using static IP addresses.
I have set it up exactly as it was before. As again, there are no differences between hardware with this computer and the others - believe me, I have checked!
The network card seems to working and the cable works as well.
Any suggestions???
Thanks
SKYE

The nic may have bit the dust. Like thegorx said, right click on my computer/properties/device options and see if the nic is listed and without any problems (yellow flags).
Also, in network neighborhood properties, make sure the adapter is present.

Thanks everyone for your input,
actually, I believe that it was a program/installation error. I removed and then reinstalled all the networking options and everything then seemed to work ok.
Thanks a lot!
SKYE
