A number of (PCI) NIC cards have to be in a MASTER PCI slot. Your motherboard manual should tell you which PCI slots have MASTER capabilities. If you don't have the manual, try switching the slot the card is in.

Daniel, I have a laptop that was stubborn about properly installing a driver for the NIC. The procedure that worked for me may be of some help to you...

Go to Device Manager and remove the NIC. Then without rebooting, go to Network>Properties>Add>Adapter. Add the NIC this way, then reboot.

Rerun the Network Client Disk that you created on the XP machine. If you still can't connect to your network, check that the Workgroup names are the same (Win98 uses Workgroup by default, XP uses Home.) Make sure that File & Printer Sharing are enabled on both PCs, and that there is at least one shared resource on each machine. All of the above should have been taken care of by running the Client Disk, but it never hurts to check anyway.

Next try Start>Run>Winipcfg. Release All, then Renew All.

If still no joy, try to ping the router. If the Router's IP Address isn't available from Winipcfg, check it from the XP box, then open an MSDOS prompt on the Win98 machine and type Ping XXX.XX.X.X (Enter), substituting the router's IP for the X's. If the request times out, your problem is between the 98 PC & the router. If the ping is successful, the problem lies in the configuration between the 2 PCs.

Post back with results.

Assuming that you downloaded the driver disk from this site, then the download is a .zip file which contains a .exe file. What exactly did you copy to the floppy (the .zip or the .exe), and how are you attempting to install the drivers? If you're pointing Windows Setup to the floppy, it wil not acknowledge the .zip or .exe as being a valid driver.

Download the .zip file to a folder on your desktop. Extract the .exe from the .zip using Winzip, Power Archiver, or you compression utility of choice. Double-clicking the .exe file runs a DOS program that extracts the actual driver files. Copy all of these driver files to your floppy, then use the floppy to install the drivers, following the instructions in the Readme.txt file on the floppy.

Daniel, the instructions are in the Win98\Win98.txt file, but basically you just put the files onto a floppy (or your HD or a CD or wherever). Then either remove the device & reinstall, pointing setup to the floppy, or select the RL2000 in Device Manager, choose Properties>Driver Tab>Reinstall Driver and point setup to the floppy.
