Ok, I am having a bit of a problem. I have 2 network cards, a 3com and a netgear. I am currently only using one of them, my 3com one. Problem is that I can't see my router or connect to it. But for some reason i can see all the other computers that are on the network, just not the router. I have tried swithcing network cards, So I know it's not my network card. All the other users can connect to the router and the internet, So i know my DSL modem is fine and the router is fine also. I tried switching ports on my hub... to see if that was the problem. I even tried reinstalling my network cards several times. I even tried forcing it to specific irq ports that are empty. I did however get it to work when i installed two occurances of the device. One of the devices has a specified ip and the other obtains dynamically. I have no idea what is going on and why it doesn't work. Can anyone give me a head up on what is going on. Reason why is because I was rebuilding this other persons computer due to a virus and i seem to be encountering the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated... including praying...

Oh by the way, I have a gighz p3 running win98 SE. I am using a DSL modem from earthlink, a single port router from linksys, an 8 port hub and an 8 port switch. And i have tested all my wires and they do work properly and all the lights go on saying it works fine... and yes they are all plug in.

Dump the hub, keep the switch (faster)
Install tcpip protocol.
Assign gateway as the router address that 192.168.xxx.1 number.
Set obtain ip address automatically.

If you can't talk to the router because it was last set with dhcp off then you'll have to give your computer an ip address 192.168.xxx.3 and log on that way.
Not sure about if you need a crossover cable between the switch and router. Hook it up straight between the network card and router until you got it going.

I know i already tried that. I'm not connected to the hub i'm using the switch... the hub is just for extra ports cuz we have more then 8 computers here. I also made sure that the dhcp is on for the router. And yes you need a cross over cable between the router and switch. but the router i have can switch it from straight through to cross over at the will of a button. But still it did not work for me... I had to install a dumby card first(which wasn't really there) in order for it to work. But is still don't know why... Still working on getting my friends comp up and running... thanks for the advice though.

Tim,

Have you tried running winipcfg at the run command and releasing the ip and renewing it? It sounds as if the default gateway (router)is not set correctly.

You can run the above command on one of the other 98SE machines to see what the default is and set it manually if needed. Just a few thoughts.

I tried that too with my computer... i couldn't see my ethernet card in winipcfg...
I mean it works right now cuz i installed the dumby ethernet card but i'm trying to figure out why it happened... it's really stressfull. I setup my ethernet card the same way on other people machines and it works just fine... just mine is all wierd and giving me a headache.
