Does anyone know of a print utility or other means for redirecting output from a dos application to a USB port for printing, or to a file or to the clipboard for editing? My dos apps send everything to the lpt1 port and I no longer have a printer there.

go into control panel and open printers folder. then select your default printer and check it properties select details tab and in "print to following port" select your usb port.

if this doesn't help then remove your printer from "system" in control panel and reboot ur pc. ur pc will detect it for u.

reply here if it doesn't work or does work

DOS apps can't print directly USB printers.

There are possible workarounds. A detailed description of a couple of workarounds, in this case for WordPerfect for DOS can be found here:

http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/winprint.html#usbprint

http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/anyprinter.html

I am not sure if this can be adapted to work with other DOS apps. I use it for WP for DOS and it does take some time to set up.

If your DOS apps are simple text based apps, they may have the option to save files in ASCII format in which case you can save them in the 8 and 3 Dos file format with a .txt extension. They can then be opened in Windows Notepad (with wordwrap on) and can be printed from there. You can also load them into a wordprocessor for enhanced editing.

Your DOS apps may also have the option to 'Print to File' but I have not found this to be very satisfactory when printing.

Helper,
Thanks for trying, but the suggestion didn't work. The DOS app still tries to print to the LPT1 port despite what Windows has been instructed to do with a particular printer.

Jez, I haven't had time to go to the websites yet, but will do so soon. Thanks.
