Can not load on Windows, tried reinstalling, shows "write protection error need to restart". I can see the files on the command prompt. I have 70mb of files that I need to back up. I have no CDR, but since Windows doesn't work if I have it's no use anyways. I tried laplink v5 on my XP computer XP doesn't work. XP only sees the computer as a removable drive if I tried to access it it shows "insert CD". I tried compressing the files using pkzip only compressed it to 63mb. Please someone help me I really need this files mostly pictures of my family. Thank you so much.

Try slaving the drive to another 98 or 95 machine and then transfer the files over that way. Or try creating a partion on the HDD that's running XP. To do this right click My Computer, choose manage, then disk management. Create a partition from there. Then slave the drive to the XP machine and then put norton ghost.exe onto a floppy. Boot to command prompt. Then type CD:/ and hit enter then once at the root of C: then navigate to the A: drive and type ghost.exe and hit enter. This will launch a batch file that will transfer the files over to the newly created partition. You may or may not have to format the extra created partition to FAT. To do this I would use the 95 or 98 bootdisk to format the extra partition. But try it without formating the new partition first
Good Luck.

No zip drive either?
You could try the old dos commands, backup or msbackup, but I don't think they would work if the HD is fat32. I'm sure there's other software that'll copy the files to floppy disks but it'll take alot of disks.
How about finding a used hard drive, installing it and copying the files to it?

If you end up using DOS, you will lose all long filenames using DOS.
There are some DOS programs that preserve long filenames. Run a search on Google, or maybe someone has a link handy and will provide it.

Hi y'all,
Hi April,
See if a friend has a USB "Case Enclosure" which is an exterior case, that will except a Drive,cdrom,cd-rw..etc...Remove the drive which has the 70mb..Install it in the case enclosure, jack it in the XP machine...After you install the USBdetector files,on the XP machine, it will show up as a removable drive..Transfer your pix to the an XP folder....If you can't find a case enclosure, check ebay...I bought one for $26.00 + shipping....Works great....Hope that helps...All the above suggestions are terrific...Just adding another thought..

It's true about any long file names being trunctated if you copy via dos but if they're only pictures and not system files, it won't matter.

You can use xxcopy.exe for this. Very handy DOS tool to cerate backups.
