I need a product key finder for windows 98 that will work in command prompt. I have a restore disk for the compaq computer and have restored it before for the person but since then the product key / book has dissappeared. I need the key to reinstall.
The computer won't boot into windows or safe mode period! Going to try and back up info via hard drive removal after key is extracted.
I need some kind of product key finder that will work in the command prompt and will fit on a floppy or cd rom.

The Product key is in the Registry. You can create a text file of the Registry in Dos. To do this, type the following: c:\windows\regedit /e c:\filename.txt The file will be too large for a floppy, so you will have to put it on the hard drive. Use 'edit' to open it and then search for ProductKey (one word) and you should see the key following it.

Thanks Dave that was exactly what I needed!
Just curious will it work with other versions of windows too?? I'd say yes to 95, but what about ME, 2000, or XP??
JPQ I already have Jellybean Magical Keyfinder and it dos not work in dos or cmd prompt. It is a windows program and requires windows to be working to run. Thanks anyhow.

I'm not positive, but I don't remember that `find' command in the Win95 Dos.
