I need to find a free threaded type message board for my site. I do not want a hosted board. Preferably something I can use on my own server that is free. I have tried several found through searching and can't get any to work. Thanks for any help!

What scripting language is available to you? I have found PHPBB simple to set up on PHP sites, and Snitz forum easy to set up on ASP sites. Both these boards are flat style, though, similar to this site. Threaded style is less poplular but there are some free ones available if you prefer to go that route. Check out Hotscripts.com, they have all flavors!

Sorry, what do you mean by scripting language? I new to this and learning. What is PHP and ASP? My domain is hosted on Netfirms if that helps you any. I checked out Hotscripts.com and it looks like I could find what I am looking for there. I just want it to be free and not hosted remotely. I want to upload it to my site. Thanks again!

The scripting language is the back end server language needed to generate dynamic web pages. It appears Netfirms offers PHP and Perl, but no database support. Most PHP forum scripts work in conjuction with MySql database. I think there are some Perl forums available that use a flat file storage system, but you might get get booted off the site if your forum has a lot of traffic.
What you need to find, though, is a script that does not require database support.
It might be easier to move to another host. Brinkster offers free hosting with ASP and Access DB support that Snitz forums will run on. There are also some free PHP/MySql servers that PHPBB would work on, you might check out http://www.coolfreepages.com/ but I haven't tried them. I have also heard of free remote MySql servers that you could use with your existing account, but if you are new to this then the extra layer of confusion might be intimidating to set it up.
There are also inexpensive servers you can find that support whatever language you want to use.

Beth there is so much work involved in creating a forum of your own, why would you want to? Sorry but I had to ask. The free boards that are out there are just perfect for what you need. You can design them to match your site exactly, and you link to it right from your site and when you click on a back or home link from the message board site it takes you back to your own site. They also only host it, they do not maintain it. That is up to you. You must go in and edit or delete or whatever you choose to do with the posts. The only thing the webhost does is exactly that. Host your (once again) free webspace. I also have my site at netfirms.com, well a few of them actually because one just isn't big enough. And that is another point, if you had your own board you would probably run out of space quickly. Bottom line, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If you can get it for free, then take it. I actually have an ez-board account somewhere, but I stopped using it because no one goes to a small time forum like that. Everyone wants to come to somewhere that is well established and this site (Computing.net) is very well known around the world for it's great computer help and it's very friendly people.
Thank you for listening to me ramble, and if you wouldn't mind I would like to take a look at your site if you could post the url. Please?
Good luck
Terri

Thanks for the advice Terri. I'll check into that again. I do have a hosted message board now but I'm having a rough time with trolls. I'll keep looking for a better board though. Here is the url to my site, but you might find it pretty boring, lol. It's just a medical transcription site.

Beth, I never find a website boaring. I can always find ideas or new schemes to use from it. I love looking at the designs of new sites. I get most of my ideas from the people here at computing.net. You should of seen my first try at a website. I actually wish I had saved just one copy of a page to compare what I have now to it. I do alot of web design. For myself and recently a few companies and organizations too.
