hi,
i have a Sony VAIO PCG-Z505R Latop.
Native OS Windows 98
CPU Type 366MHz Intel Pentium II
HDD Comments 6.4 GB fixed hard drive
Standard Memory 64 MB (non-removable)
.
i bought a usb external dvd drive LG GSA-E40L. im trying to install window 98. im trying to boot the CD from Dos but it doesnt work. i tried the duse and other method. i only have 1 usb port, so that i mean i have to take out the floppy and put in the CD. is there anyway i can install window 98? and how? thank you for ur help

If you can't manage to load the CD win98 directory onto the HD and install from there,
then see this:Under How To's, see third item down
(Load Windows with swapable drives).DerekW

i might be misinterpreting your question but check your bios settings under setup and see if you can switch the boot order with CD-ROM at the top, then you should be able to boot from the cd, i believe the win98 disk is bootable.

i was able to boot from C. but i got this error msg. i tried to boot from usb external dvd drive LG GSA-E40L.
i follow the instruction from this website:
http://www.mesich.com/this is what i put for my config.sys
DEVICE=C:\USBASPI.SYS.SYS /D:MSCD001FOR AUTOEXEC.BAT I PUT
C:\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001aspi for uhci/uhci usb mass-storage version 1.07
usbaspi : invalid parameter string.c:\c:\mscdex.exe /d:mscd0001
device driver not found: 'mscd0001'.
no valid cdrom device drivers selected.what should i do? what can i do to detect the usb external dvd rom in dos? thank you

I have not checked thoroughly nor do I know
your system but this looked very odd to me:USBASPI.SYS.SYS
I think it should just be USBASPI.SYS
Cut out the last .SYS and see if this helps.

actually, i was mistyped here. i also change the usbaspi.sys to cd1.sys, cd2.sys, cd3.sys, cd4.sys, and it still doesnt work. it gave me the same message. is there any other way?

Well, it looks like that website information was intended for laptops where you have a facility to swap your CD with your floppy drive (using the information exactly as given on there).
If you can't do that, then you are probably right, the system is unable to call up your USB drive from DOS.
Has Windows gone? If not you could copy the \win98 folder from the CD to c:\win98 on the HD as suggested in post #1 (using Windows).

"aspi for uhci/uhci usb mass-storage version 1.07
usbaspi : invalid parameter string."Seems to indicate a syntax problem.
Mine is:
USBASPI1.SYS /v
I thonk the /v is verbose.
You'll need to hammer out the right driver and syntax.
AND WHEN YOU DO you also need a CDROM driver like aoatapi.sys /D:oemcd001

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2
