I am using win98. So have been using avg 7.5. Earlier I was on my computer, and it froze up as avg was updating. At the "closing down connection" part that it usually lags on. It didnt unfreeze. So I hard reset my computer. Now avg is all screwed up.
So I go to uninstall it. But I get a error
"1 error occured"
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file setup.exe: creating backup....
Access is denied. (5) %DESTINATION% = "C:\Program Files\AVG Free\setup.exe.install_backup", %SOURCE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG Free\setup.exe"
Program manager does not show any avg programs running in the background since I force closed them. How do I unstall AVG 7.5?In the mean time, how do I prevent this broken avg 7.5 install from loading at start up?

Try reinstalling AVG, then run the uninstall from safe mode. And if you don't have CCleaner, install & run it to help clean up the mess. Do NOT install Yahoo toolbar! (it comes packaged with CCleaner)

BTW, what do you plan on using in place of AVG?

In searching for ways of uninstalling avg (since its broken anyways and no longer supported soon to boot)
I found http://www.freerav.com/ and http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_ho... recommended in a thread. Are those good free antivirus programs?
Could I just delete its directory and use hijackthis to clean up all registry entries? Or would there be something missed?
Where do you go to edit what loads upon startup?

Yes, and I appreciate that. But if you would please answer my questions that would also be appreciated.

I know little about "Rising" and have never seen it mentioned. There is doubt in my mind about whether it is just a trial and also whether it even runs on W98.
The old AVG 7.5 runs fine on W98 so I don't know why you ran into problems. Support for W98 finishes this year and AVG 8.0 needs XP or above.
I would run with AVAST (which still supports W98 and is free). If the suggestion in post #1 does not uninstall AVG properly there may be some AVG files still lurking elsewhere, so ideally these should be searched for and removed first. After this you might have to resort to registry cleaners rather than HijackThis. Don't remove anything unless you are certain what it is! Shout back about removals if need be.
some other bloke...

to uninstall AVG 7.5, click on the .exe file u used to install it. There will be 3 options, uninstall will be one of them.

The original install of AVG is pooched & won't uninstall properly. 1st it has to be repaired, THEN it can be uninstalled.

"The original install of AVG is pooched & won't uninstall properly. 1st it has to be repaired, THEN it can be uninstalled"If hobbes installs AVG again using the original exe file, the AVG installation will probably be repaired by doing so. At least, that has always worked for me when I tried it. I haven't had much luck with using the Repair option - re-installing it without un-installing it first when AVG is not working right has always worked.
He would then have the options of either
- continuing to use the then functional AVG 7.5 for the time being,- or if he wants to change to using Avast or another anti-virus program...
- use the then functional un-install in Add/Remove Programs to un-install AVG 7.5
- or running the original exe file again that will give him the choices Repair or Un-install, and choosing Un-install.My AVG 7.5 is still being updated on my 98SE computer, and I am not getting messages about support for AVG 7.5 running out on that computer, though I have seen messages about that on other computers with 98SE on them.
I installed Avast on another computer - at first glance it appears to be more difficult to disable, such as when you install software, than AVG 7.5 and 8.x are.
