I plan on a clean install on my Compaq Presario 4508 in the near future without the use of their "Quick Recovery" program. I tried Q&A in their "so called forum" without any success. I know how proprietary Compaq's can be and have had experience with the F10 setup/Diagnostics utility. This leads me to my question. Is anyone familiar with this procedure on a Compaq Presario, is there an F10 or similar utility I will have to deal with? I want to FDisk/Format and do a clean install of my O/S. I would appreciate any and all help/suggestions. Thank you.

As long as you have a full install CD of Windows then you do NOT need to use the Compaq junk CD's.
FDISK, format, boot to a floppy, and install.

Be careful an the fdisk. Lots of Compaq stuff uses the hard drive for their "flash bios", they call it something else like ROM pack. It is usually the first 7-15M of your hard drive, so you should see a nonDOS partition. DO NOT DELETE that partition and everything should be just fine.

I done it that way with a compaq I used to own and lost half the darn 10gig hdd to the bios that's on the hdd I don't know what they call neither I was told this is the only way it could be done I don't know if you could call it flash bios or not but in order for it work it's got to come from Compaq I'm sort of just being curious is there another way of doing this without giving up half the 10gig hdd, It be nice to know......Thanks nil

Will......What would happen if he replaced his hard drive with a new one ? Would he be able to install Win on it ?

If he you want to install a new drive, you will have to dowload the untility disks from Compaq for the particular model. it will format and craete the non dos partion which the bios info will be and another patition for the windows installation.

A few tips from someone that has done exactly as you plan to do more times than I care to talk about:
First here is the link to all the Compaq drivers you will need, including your ROM PAC:
Presario 4508 Desktops with Microsoft Windows 98Next a small tip that will be a time saver:
If you plan on upgrading your operating system, don't look for drivers on the Compaq site to support the new operating system. You have to use the old driver no matter what you are upgrading to. Compaq PC's will not recognize anything else to work properly.Last:
If you do decide to opt and use the quick restore disk and you have multiple cd rom drives, remember that cd rom drives reverse themselves in dos.Hope this helps you when you're ready.
