Need a free IRQ

Hello,

My problem began the other day when my new cable internet service provider came to install a 3Com Etherlink III (3c509b) into my machine. Shortly after he left I realized I had no sound. When I went into my Device Manager it said my SoundBlaster 16 had a conflict. Well I managed to disable my printer port and was able to get my sound working again. But now I have no free IRQ for my printer port. The ONLY free IRQ I have is 12 and windows 98 will not let me change the port to that resource. What I really want to be able to do here is take my S3 ViRGE DX off off IRQ 5 and change it to 12, move my soundcard from 7 to 5 and then use IRQ 7 for my printer port. But when I try to change the IRQ for my display it says "this resource setting cannot be modified". Anybody have any ideas on how I can get my printer port to work again without losing any other devices? I have already checked the video card for jumpers but their are none. My system is a Pentium 200 MMX with 32 Megs of RAM.

I was able to free an IRQ on my PC by disabling the setting in the BIOS that said to reserve an interrupt for VGA. In Device Manager, you can double click on "Computer" to see what IRQs are in use. This may help you find one that can be eliminated. Your BIOS may also let you assign an IRQ directly to a PCI slot. Hope this helps.

One way is to use trial and error in resetting different devices that require IRQs. If your video is Plug n play you may be able to get it to IRQ 12 by forcing your sound to the desired IRQ, and remove the device for the display driver. On reboot Win 9x should detect a "new pnp device" and reallocate resources for it. If this doesn't work, do a boot up in safe mode and use a VGA or SVGA adapter. Then you can work to restore your settings.

Got a free com-port?
Then disable it in the bios!

I've just had a cable modem installed in my computer. The cable man said he needed an IRQ so he removed my LTP(com1), and now I want my printer back. I've tried reinstalling my printer driver. I get an abnormal system message. I have a 333 Celeron w/32MB RAM.

I've been trying to wrestle an IRQ away for my cable modem's Ethernet card (3com) for two days. I have an All in Wonder Pro AGP video card and although I have two IRQ's open, they both keep using the same one and it's non-stop blue screens. The old "resource setting cannot be modifed" keeps pissing me off, and I've tried every BIOS setting I can think of.

Any help for these cable things?

Just to let you know, I did fix this problem on my own. It seems my cards didn't want to give up the IRQ sharing until they were phsyically removed from the motherboard and reinserted. I took the AGP video card out, put it back in, then took the Ethernet card out and put it in a different PCI slot. Fired up the PC with the default BIOS settings and windows assigned them accurately (10 for video and 11 for ethernet). I'd prefer 11 for video but I'll settle for this anyday.

There is a solution to free up the IRQ's:
As mentioned before, go to the BIOS & disable the PCI-IRQ assignment. That is one. Don't do it if you have multiple monitors!

Second: Install your soundcard on IRQ5 under DOS. This can be done with this:

DEVICE=C:\

\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 /WIN95

DEVICE=C:\

\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS

If the VGA-card gets an IRQ assigned automatically, it will be somewhere in the range of 9-12. So, there is not a conflict for 7, the LPT.

Third: Disable the IDE-deice on the soundcard! Almost every soundcard has an IDE-connector, for the CD-rom. This was the Second port, when IDE only had 2 drives supported, but now that most boards do 4 drives, on IRQ 14 & 15, it is not needed anymore. It just soupes up an expensive IRQ.

For now I can not think of anything else, but if you go to the system configuration in Windows 98 (C:\WINDOWS\CONTROL.exe Sysdm.cpl, System,1), you will see the hardware listed.

And if you run MSINFO.EXE, you will see which IRQ's are assigned where.
Find out yourself, which one is not needed anymore...

I have had the same issues w/ my Ethernet Card and the IRQ, but my problem is that is not automatically assigning an IRQ. If I follow the steps to free up IRQ's will my card automatically be given an IRQ?
