we recently rebooted our computer and now we only have 2 bit color and 16 bit color and cannot change the pixels. and it sucks I need to know what kind of video driver is in it but i have no idea how to find out without taking it out. Any Ideas? Its a hewlett packard pavilion 8562 with windows 98

You could also download Aida32 from here:
http://downloads.theregister.co.uk/...
Display/Windows Video should contain the info you need. What it shows is taken straight off the hardware.

Yep - you need to ID the display adapter - that HP link appears to go to a keyboard driver
btw 'reboot' means 'restart' (not 'reinstall')

well we did the system recovery on it and i just need to know how to fiqure out what kind of video driver my computer came with. how can i find that?

Follow my #2. That free program will identify your hardware which is necessary before a driver can be sought.
As an aside, there is no system recovery on W98. Can we take it that you meant scanreg /restore (which just restores the registry)?
DerekW

i downloaded the program and clicked display and windows video but there is nothing there its all grey and blank

Your recovery CD 'should' have come equipped with all of the required drivers - those discs basically contain only the specific drivers for a specific model (which is why they're not much use on other machines)

the system recovery disc doesnt have it and i know for a fact that the application recovery disc does but unfortunately that cd was broken when it was given to us and the computer wont read it because there is a nick in it like its broken or cracked so it wont work any other ideas

Sure - how about: Don't try to 'reboot' (reinstall) Windows if you know your driver disc is broken?
Aida or Everest should allow you to ID the hardware - keep exploring with one or the other

Ah, well, hindsight is great.
Still, an application disc should only contain... applications, and probably not drivers.
I've never had the 'pleasure' of using one of those infernal recovery CDs, but unless it's for another machine entirely, it's sole purpose is to install Windows and the drivers suitable for that model.
Everest & Aida are practically the same, and usually can't be beat for determining hardware - take a look under Aida32's 'Display' -> 'PCI/AGP Video' listing

What's the HP part number on the applications cd that's cracked? I've got a 5011-6313 disk I could copy and send if it's the same. I might have others too.

Looks like it's an nvidia--unless you've added a different card. Here's an HP download:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...
or you can go to Nvidia support. In the first box choose 'graphics driver' and in the second 'geforce and TNT2'.

Nicely done - that HP site is like an open book ; )

If you are sorted then fine but as an aside, perhaps surprisingly if you copy a damaged CD and burn it onto a new one it often works.
