Upon reformatting hard drive/installing system recovery disk for Nec system then restarting it loads msdos and says cd rom model number not found, termintating program,
C:\tempcd]...
the cd model # is CDR-135OA
how do I tell it this so it loads windows 95?

Your bootdisk isn't loading the right drivers. Either you've got a proprietary cdrom and it's attempting to load IDE drivers or it's IDE cdrom and the bootdisk has proprietary drivers.

The drive is 6X so it should be IDE but it's a Multispin NEC brand and some of those needed proprietary drivers. You might try a 98 bootdisk that has IDE drivers from someplace like www.bootdisk.com. If it works then go ahead and install. If not then we'll need to hunt down Multispin drivers.

Or the cdrom is bad, not connected properly or its IDE controller isn't enabled in cmos/bios setup.

If you're booting from the cdrom then the controllers are enabled. I just assumed you were using a bootdisk since that's the typical message you get under the circumstances I mentioned above.

Upon rereading your original post I take it you successfully used the recovery disk but when it reboots you're getting the error.

Is this recovery disk the same thing as a restore disk? I mean will it completely reinstall your OS on an empty (formatted) drive? Also, when it reboots is it supposed to go into 95 or should it continue the installation?

Anyway it sounds like this disk has created a config.sys and autoexec.bat for cdrom support but the drivers is wrong for your cdrom.

You can check the config.sys file by typing
type c:\config.sys at a dos prompt. Post back what it says. We should be able to edit out that line calling the cdrom driver. However, even if the driver isn't finding the cdrom , the system should go ahead and boot into 95. So changing that line may not fix anything.

I'm just not sure what this recovery disk is doing as it's different than a regular 95 installation cd. Hopefully others familiar with it will post in.

So when it gives the error message about terminating the program does it just stop there at a dos prompt or does it go on into 95?

Post back contents of config.sys and autoexec.bat using type c:\config.sys and type c:\autoexec.bat from a dos prompt.

So you can't type anything at all? It just locks up? If you can type anything in then type the commands I mentioned above.

If it's locking up then try booting to a dos prompt. Start up the computer. Before the OS starts to load start tapping F8. A menu should come up. Choose 'safe mode command prompt only' and then type in the commands and post back the file contents.

If I press F8 it says msdos will confirm each config.sys command, if I say no to auto exec.bat it gets me to the C:\ prompt then if I type config.sys it says bad command, then if I type autoexec.bat it goes right back to CD-rom auto detection utility version 1.0 cd rom model # not found!

Enter the commands *exactly* as DAVE has advised - all of the boldtext (including type):

type c:\config.sys

... to see the contents of that file - and:

type c:\autoexec.bat

... for that one too

I'm wondering about something else. You say the message after F8 says 'MSDOS will confirm. . . '. If you've got 95 on there I don't think you should get a message about msdos doing anything. Maybe you didn't get it 'formatted' correctly or somehow installed something else before the recovery process. What steps did you take when you did the formatting?

And post back contents of config.sys and autoexec.bat.

I was able to stop it from loading autocddetect by typing n, then it loaded windows 95, however I was unable to use the cd rom drive, it didnt show up in "my computer" folder. then for some reason it broke and when I turn it on with or without the hard drive there is no nec screen, only fuzz!

That sounds like something completely different. Just make sure everything is connected properly and all the cables are in tight.

If the 'autocddetect' you're talking about was on the posting screen (just after the memory check) then you shouldn't cancel that. The problem is almost certainly in config.sys and/or autoexec.bat. There's no sense in continuing until you post back their contents. (Of course if you can't get it to start up at all then we can't do anything either.)

I tested the cpu chip on another pc and it works fine, everything is plugged in fine, when I power on there is only fuzz on the monitor with the brightness all the way up.

Does it make any beeps when you start it up?

'Fuzz' on the screen usually means the cable isn't connected to the video card. Or a bad cable or card or monitor.
