I am having a problem with Win98 Startup Menu. I had bought my PC with Win98SE preinstalled on it. I have a Recovery CD. There is a Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. The following THREE files are missing or corrupted: HIMEM.SYS, DBLBUFF.SYS and IFSHLP.SYS before listing above files. Need some help badly, please!

Try this for starters but I'd hold off on the last line for now (the bit about fdisk/mbr).

If you haven't got a startup floppy you can get one from www.bootdisk.com (download and "create" it on some other computer).

The files might not actually be missing.

some other bloke...

Did it ever work right? If so, what happened to it between the last time it worked OK and the first time it didn't?

Check in cmos/bios setup and make sure the hard drive is properly identified. Open the case and make sure the hard drive data cable is in good shape and tightly connected.

If all that checks out you should probably use the recovery disk.

It sounds like the Windows directory has been moved or deleted.

The three files named are as a result of the default DOS=AUTO. Windows tries to load these from the Windows directory, but this is not where it ought be.

The next step is to load the Command Interpreter "Command.com" from the same directory (eg c:\windows).

The usual cause is by drag and drop of the Windows directory into some other directory, say in Explorer.

You may need to boot from a floppy diskette, and then hunt down where the Windows directory is. Move it to the root directory
