I recently fdisked my parents computer and erased windows 95 and replaced it with windows 98. Now the system tells me it can't detect a modem. Its a compact presario 2257,I have the floppy that has the driver for "presario V.90 modem" but when I put that in it still doesn't work.I took the modem out and reseated it hoping the plug and play deal would kick in but nothing. The modem worked fine before I changed operating systems. Can you possibly shed a little light on me

You should give the add new hardware in control panel a try. It will search for PnP devices and then legacy hardware. Is thie modem a ISA or PCI modem ? Did you check out the BIOS for that device - see if its port is not disabled ? Also I have met some cases where W98 setup.exe would not Id a device because it would bring an incorrect settings or install a device driver that can stall the system.

Go to settings. Select control panel.
In control panel, select system. In system
select devices(?) manager. Check there to
see if you have a COMM port enabled.
I had similar symptoms from no comm port
in windows. The symptoms included that a
communications or dialling program in DOS could dial out.

Go to system properties/device manager. Check if any yellow exclamation marks there. Delete the device showing that, press refresh button, feed in your modem drivers when it asks.
Does this solve?
