my second hard drive dont work

Wel I installed my hard drive in my computer by putting the IDE cable in the rite place and then the power cable in the new hard drive, Then wen the computer booted up it worked like normal and wen it came onto the desktop it did this thing that said it detected something new and did this litle loading bar and i thought ok then thats good. Then i looked in my computer on the desktop and ther was only the c: drive. so i went 2 control panel and went on asdd new hardware and it cant detect it. any ideas P.s i did set the hard drive to slave.
