It seems whether I'm chatting on ICQ or browsing the net, every 5 minutes I'm getting disconnected from my ISP. We just got this Rockwell HCF 56K internel modem because our ISP needed a 56KFlex modem and ours was a X2 and we weren't getting good downloads. Now we connect at 48000bps but our modem won't stay connected while our X2 always did. We can't win. ISP techs say Rockwells have be reported to do this. They are looking into a fix for it. Is there a modem string to try and get this modem to stay connected? They had us try AT+MS=V90, but it still disconnects. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
I suspect that your IP is using "disconect if idle fo x-seconds", and that it is targeted at modems that use 56k bandwidth. They will deny it, of course. Try one of the stay-alive programs to be found at www.winfiles.com in thier Windows shareware\windows95/98 software\internet and networking tools section. You can find a couple of good freeware ones there.
>They had us try AT+MS=V90, but it still >disconnects. Any suggestions greatly >appreciated.
THAT IS LAME! Rockwell HCF modems without the absolute latest drivers will crap out.
Try one of these:
AT+MS=K56 - No V.90 but more stable
AT+MS=V34 - No high speed 28.8 max - but at least you are on.

hi ,i play the starcraft game by blizzard, online on battle net. i have alot of game disconnects and red lags (slow ping rate) i need to know where i can get the latest drivers and updates for my rockwell modem its a 56 k but seems slow (alot of unable to download and down load error messages with it too)it . it also disconnects from my isp frequently do you have the rockwell web address where i can get patches to fix it or driver upgrades im very disatisfied with its current perfomance.
I have 6 IBM's with rockwells no matter how many new drivers you insatll they will not work right. Reason is bad chip sets and nobody wants to admitt Took them out after a month and 100 dollars in calls trying to get them to work put in 3 com usr they work great now it is not you or your server it is the rockwell based modem they are junk
I have an IBM Aptiva with a crapwell 56k modem, and it sucks! I've been battling with IBM to replace it, and they have finally told me to take my computer to an authorized repair center. If the modem tests bad, I have been given a case # that will allow me to get my modem replaced on-site. I have tried everything with that modem- 3com USR is the way to go.

The HCF Rockwell is the biggest piece of crap to come along in a long time. Personally you couldn't pay me to own a "softwannabemodem".
I use a BestData56k and connect first time everytime and stay connected until I decide to sign me off.

the rockwell hcf modem is a resource modem. your system resources have to be very high for it to work with aol, aol says 92% or higher, so have the pc start with no programs starting except those that are required for the pc to work. call the pc maker and if you have win 98 have them take out all unneccary stuff

I work for tech support for an ISP and I feel so bad for people who call in for help when I know I cannot make it work but I am not allowed to tell them that it will not work, as this would "disparage another company's product" All the strings in the world and all the software I have seen is junk. My old 33600 works FAR BETTER.... Stick with Hard Cards and forget the soft modems...esp. rockwell.
I live in Mexico, a few miles down the Texas border, and took the infamous initiative of purchasing a brand new Compaq 5190. The crap has a built in Rockwell HCF modem. That raises the question: would you STOP buying the whole system of your choice just because it contains a defective, replaceable component? Who eats the cost of replacing it if you choose to buy the system?

Depends on who you bought it from and the conditions.Tell THEM to make it work and after 5 or 6 tries they will probably just give you a different modem, or offer to let you pay more for an "upgrade"
i work for a on line servier also and it's not fun..not only do we have the members very upset at us that we can't get them online but we also have to deal with the fact that we feel bad without our members help which is no fun at all .. i mean it's embarassing to say but my mother uses the same service that i work for and i could do nothing to help her except send her to the computer manufacturer ..if you look at the computers and the paterns 90%of the compaq computers have a rockwell hcf modem and 90% of the ctx computers have lt win modems.. both are software driven and both require at least 90% system resources free..i mean you buy a cpu and expect it to work but if you check your start up group you have any were from20-40 programs there all at one time that are just draining away those resources ..my personal opinion is stick with the pros you know like us robotics or something ...a hardware driven modem...cause trithfully it really saddens me to know that there is nothing that i can really do to help ..please people ask all the questions you possibly can to avoid getting something that really is'nt worth your money and or time...

Hi,
I'm having the same problems with my new softK56 V.90 Rockwell as well and despite lots of assistance and ideas from Globalnet I still have this intermittent problem. It even happens on the new ie5 Browser. When you have an answer please forward same to me.

Compaq has finally acknowledged the problem on their support forums. However, I wonder if they will ever really get a fix for it.
I have a USR installed now and this modem works like it should.
I would really like a link or a URL to the Compaq support forum that has acknowledged this....REALLY REALLY interested in that info....
I was speaking with tech support at aol..and they asked me to ck my dianostics of my modem..They informed me to call rockwell support and have the following changed to .....the add.should be 2f8
.....the uart: should be ins 8250
.....the interrupt..should be 11
.....my com is 2 and i have a rockwell hcf 56k fax pci modem..hope this helps..
I was having trouble with mine also but my IP server gave me this string(at&f&c1%c0s10=100s25=100) and with my modem set at 57600 I connect always at that speed and i download at 4.6 - 4.8kbs I no longer get disconnected either
INS 8250?????WRONG!
call them again, it's the drivers that set that number, and they all set it different,
there is no "standard"...
My only complaint is that when I go online to play a game I get dumped after a few seconds of game play. All other tasks work well but that one small detail is still a thorn in my side. I bought my computer with the hopes that I would get a system I could finally play some online games. Silly me! Now I need a new modem!

Well, Compaq has all the answers. When I called to complain about the disconnects and slow FTPing rate they told me that there was a file to upload that would fix it- no problem. Go to:

Then do a search for SP8897
Hit the first line.
Download the exe. file.
Execute it.

I have had my compaq since aug of 98, seems like everytime my isp upgrades my modem works less. I can never stay connected for more than 10 or 15 mins without getting knocked off. Compaq told me to download the latest modem drivers. Well I did that and its worse now than ever. THE ROCKWELL HCF MODEM
The rockwell hcf modem is a resource modem, it requires a lot of resources, we usually put them AT&F+MR=1^M. We also reccomend 92% resources. You also need to always keep the most current driver. Ifyou have a generic clone, you can find the driver at winfiles.com. If you have a name brand such as Compaq or HP, call manufacturer.
The uart shoud read 16550, the 8250 can only support a baud rate of 9600bps. it is an indication that the driver or software is outdated or not installed properly.

I also work for an ISP. This modem sucks for the most part. s10=100 and s25=100ish can help with disconnects. It makes the modem more tolerant of line noise and less apt to drop the line. If you have trouble connecting right away or get booted frequently, in the modem settings make sure you're recording a log file (modemlog.txt). At the top of this file is your modem .inf name. Do a search for this file, open it up, and toward the bottom of the file change all "8000" to "6000" (about 4 of them usually) should like something like this - HKR, LineSetPlayFormat, 1,, "at+vsm=130,8000,0,0
"
HKR, LineSetRecordFormat, 1,, "at+vsm=130,8000,0,0"
HKR, VoiceAnswer, 3,, "at+vsm=130,8000,0,0"
HKR, VoiceDialNumberSetup, 5,, "at+vsm=130,8000,0,0"
This has had a dramatic effect for some users and can be used in conjunction with the s10 and s25 settings. Good luck.

Try ths if you have a 56k\v.90 pci rockwell hcf type modem. Download the new firmware for the spirit 56k modem at www.zoltrix.com. Save it in a folder once downloaded. Click the device manager tab. Follow these steps click on modems double click your modem, click drivers tab, click update driver, click next, click have disk, click browse , double click the drive were the folder you put the firmware is, double click the folder, click ok, ok agian, click next, if a warning pops up click "yes", click close, click close. Now if you have an hcf controller in your device manager you need to change this too. Follow the same steps. Reeboot your pc now go into modem settings in advance tab and put S10=255 .Make sure you select your new named modem in D.U.N! Sometimes this cures the problem if not you can go back to your same settings. It fixed my modem. Never disconnects only when i tell it to. But i have to admit a hardware based modem is the way to go!
I have one of these modems and it wont even connect, it says line busy, but I know it is not ! any ideas?
Try the string of AT&F&C1&D2&K3. Also with Rockwell you get lots of computer not answering at least where i am at. I added three commas and that helps alot.
I recently had my comp crash and after installing a different registery I was bale to get things back to norm but ever since then I haven't been able to use by Rockwell and it tells me that the registtry can't access the port number. Any ideas?
OK,OK. Crapwell, very funny. Anyway, I own a
HP pavilion 6400 series and I have a fix that

I am no longer logged off intermittently, although now I experience a browser crashing
problem that may be related to software incompatibility issues. Yes, hardware driven
modems are better, but what's a local yokel to do? Hope this helps, y'all
I work Tech support for an ISP. I can tell you right now. Almost every single connectivity call that I get Is a Rockwell or a Winmodem. There is NOTHING you can do to try to get these modems to work correctly. Buy a modem that has Error Correction and Data Compression.

Rockwell tells me to get in touch with the computer manufacturer. Does anyone have an 800 number (or any number) for HP tech support?
Best thing I got is 1-208-323-home. I have been having the same problems and I am about to call HP and see what I can say to them about this issue
I have had all of the same problems. Just stay on Compaq and keep a case # open. After you have called 6 or 7 times and have done everything (including quick restore and carbon copy support) insist on a new modem and tell them that you will not accept a rockwell replacement because you know that they are defective and that you are not alone. I am getting a new and different modem from Compaq tomorrow night. I'll keep you posted and let you know how it goes. DON'T TAKE ANY SHIT!! If you bought a Compaq Internet PC (that's what they call it) and it doesn't connect to the internet, then you didn't get what you've paid for. If this doesn't work, I am considering contacting my state Attorney General.

I read this entire page and not one good thing to say for the Crapwell!
I too am the unfortunate owner of the (P.O.S) Piece of S--T!!!! I own a HP 8485 with all of the aformentioned problems! I was advised to update the driver, which I did, and now my average connect went from 46666 to a stellar 44000. After regaining conciousness, following a slight concussion from beating my head on the table for my own stupidity, (listening to HP) I reinstalled my original driver from the recovery CD, in a nutshell this did nothing but waste my time. My advice is DO NOT upgrade the driver, it will only infuriate you and you may need a cat scan! I think the update has a data ghost that will haunt you until you get a new modem! If you own a Hp that is under warrentee you are screwed. Hp in their infinete wisdom has decreed that "thou shalt not remove the modem lest you revoke the warrentee!" And as a final kick in the nuts the modem is a soundcard as well!
Thanks for reading my rant!

You are all correct. This is the worse modem (a close tie with the HSP Micromodem 56) to come along in a long time. Spend the 125 bucks on a good hardware based modem and save not only your sanity, but the sanity of your ISP's technicians, and long distance calls to your pc manufacturer. You will come out better in the long run.

I just bought a Presario 3 days ago with the Rockwell 56K/V.90. Now I have to make repeated attempts to sign into AOL because I can't get a carrier signal. Any Ideas, besides the obvious?
Have you tried the fairly obvious? It may have escaped your attention; disable Call Waiting. To do that:
1. Click Start, Control Panel, double-click Modems
2. From the General tab of the Modems Properties page, click Dialing Properties
3. From the My Location tab of the Modems Properties page, check the box labeled "This location has call waiting." Then select *70, 70# or 1170 from the drop-down list to disable call waiting for your area.
You may also consider disabling V90 and K56flex and see what happens.
Rockwell based modems have been solid performers in the K56Flex arena, however, with V.90, they have faltered a bit.
Still a very good choice for a modem chipset, Rockwell's V.90 code still has some interoperability issues that need to be ironed out. Rockwell based modems still connect very strongly using K56Flex.
If you have a Rockwell based modem that is V.90 compatible and you are experiencing random disconnects or poor throughput, then disable V.90 and use K56Flex. This appears to resolve most issues of this type.
Rockwell has two different chipsets. Again, an initialization string will usually straighten things out. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to determine which chipset is being used on a particular modem. If you happen to have some information that will help us determine this, please let us know.
The best thing to try first is the initialization string of AT+MS=56,0,32000,56000. You may also limit the stop speed a modem connects at by changing the 56000 to a lower value. The other to try if the first one does not work is AT+MS=K56. Both of these initialization strings will tell the modem to disable V.90 and use K56Flex. Below is a list of +MS commands.
Most common Rockwell Chipset (lower highest value to limit top speed) Format AT +MS= protocol, 0, min speed, max speed
+MS=56 32000-56000
+MS=12 V.90 33333-56000
+MS=11 V.34 16800-33600
+MS=10 V.32 9600-14400
Newer Rockwell Chipset
+MS=K56 K56Flex
+MS=V90 V.90
+MS=V34 V.34
+MS=V32 V.32
Rockwell 56K Chipset
AT+MS=56,0,32000,56000 (enables K56Flex only)
AT+MS=12,0,33333,56000 (enables V.90 only)
AT+MS=V90,0,300,33600,300,54000
AT+MS=11,1,14400,33600
For Rockwell HFC chips:
V.90 preferred (K56flex will still work) +MS=V90
K56flex preferred (V.90 will still work) +MS=K56
Disable V.90 and K56flex, use V.34 (28.8/33.6) +MS=V34
AT command strings necessary to Disable V.90 and Kflex
1. Click on “Start”
2. Move your mouse arrow up to “Settings”
3. In the window to the right Click on “Control Panel”
4. Double-click on the Modem Icon
In the Modem Properties’ window that appears, there are two tabs “General” and “Diagnostics.” Make sure the General tab is selected.
5. Highlight your modem (chip set)
6. Click on “Properties” button (NOT DIALING PROPERTIES)
In the “Rockwell HCF 56k…Modem Properties’” page appears, there are two tabs, “General” and “Connections.” Make sure the Connections tab is selected.
7. On the bottom of this page Click on the “Advanced” button
Now the “Advanced Connection Settings’” page appears.
8. In the “Extra Settings” area, near the bottom, is the location to type in the new AT Command STRINGS (see strings below).
For Rockwell HCF chips:
V.90 preferred (K56flex will still work) AT+MS=V90
K56flex preferred (V.90 will still work) AT+MS=K56
Disable V.90 and K56flex, use V.34 (28.8/33.6) AT+MS=V34
(Note: “AT” must be included in the string)
9. After typing in the string of choice click on apply and close out.
Something else to consider is that various Internet Service Providers (ISP) typically use this to reduce Bandwidth Traffic. Therefore, when users try to connect to the Internet, they experience less busy signals. If you want disable this feature, check with your ISP or check the help files in your online software.
If you need further assistance please contact us at (800) OK COMPAQ or for other fixes check Compaq’s Website at http://www.compaq.com/athome/support/serv_desk.html.
You might also consider having the system checked out at your nearest COMPAQ authorized service center (Recommended). They will troubleshoot the system, the motherboard (modem slot) and also the modem.
I work for an online provider... Man, you wouldn't believe how many calls I get about people who can't get connected "right out of the box". It's a shame these people who manufacture the systems that include the Rockwell HCF don't also include a large hammer (with which to bash their machine to bits) and a prepaid return shipping label so you can send the remains back!! All the wonderful thoughts posted here say one simple thing "buy something WITHOUT the Rockwell "we wish you luck" HCF modem and your life will be wonderful". Even the 2 mile long post by COMPAQ, which I might add reads like VCR instructions and must be considered for a Pulitzer prize, hints that excuses are the best policy.Folks, take my humble advice... before you commit to a system, ask if the modem is a rockwell or lt win... if either one is mentioned, run like (*%$# to the nearest USR dealer!!

The point is having read the above comments, it is clear that I have a Rockwell modem problem and not a problem with my computer. (probably)

My Rockwell 56K flash upgradeable modem worked fine from January to September. Then 3 to 4 weeks ago I first of all started having problems displaying web pages. I'd get a message saying "cannot connect to server or dns error" no matter how many links, urls or shortcuts I tried. I did some web searches using Webferret which simultaneously uses 10 search engines and it returned loads of urls as usual but my browser couldn't display any of them, so at first I thought I had a problem with my browser or dns settings or winsock32.dll file.
But then 10 days ago I started being unable to download, even with the very good Go!Zilla download manager and it kept giving the message "Server status: no response", no matter which server was used, even when there were 50 alternative download sites and no matter what I tried to download.
After more searching help and troubleshooting the information said I probably had modem or connectivity problems.
I tried pinging some servers and each time I got 2 groups of 4 timeout messages (4 attempts for an http and 4 for the equivalent ftp). The ping involved sending a package of just 32 bytes so I take it this means that the connection is so slow that it breaks off before or as it reaches the other server?
Today I look up my ISP's page and discover they have been upgrading their modem to V90, some types of which are apparently not compatible with Rockwell 56K.
So it sounds as though it's my server's fault for upgrading to V90! Even if I were to upgrade my modem to V90 it would work at a slower speed than before. I read somewhere that one or two types of V90 do work with Rockwell so maybe I should see if there is another ISP near me who uses those types.
The only thing I don't understand is if my pings timeout and my downloads don't start, how am I still able to browse for hours without being disconnected from my ISP? If V90 interacting badly with my Rockwell 56K modem is the problem why am I not disconnected from my ISP as well as other servers?
(Sorry this is long but hope it makes sense)
Hey i wanna know how to use the at&f&c1%c0s10=100s25=100 string where do i put it in at email me how please

it'll only rock ur goddamn comp. into a piece of shit.Go GET A CABLE MODEM!!

The string at&f&c1%c0s10=100s25=100 seems to have fixed my frequent disconnects. I use IBM Global Dialer and the AT strings are defined in that application. To answer Response 73, it depends on what you use to connect to your ISP.

I'm glad to here I'm not the only one that was dumb enough to buy a Compaq with a rockwell modem.I've had nothing but problems with it from day one.Won't connect and when it does finally connect that lasts about 10 minutes and gone again.I've got the same run around as everyone else here. (It's got to be the isp or the phone lines.) Funny thing my son hoooked his computer up to my isp and phone lines and zip no problems. What does that tell you Rockwell modems need to be recalled and everyone of us should be reinburst for the aggrevation this has caused to all of us. Sorry for venting.

It is a combination of all of the above comments. I have this Rockwell HCF 56K Speakerphone PCI wantabe modem installed in a HP 6465. Had connection problems with AOL with this and a 3com modem. Then had same problems with Worldnet.att both help desks said it was the modem with the modem even after I explained to them that I could connect to Work ( I am a IT Professional) at 33,000 to 48,880 and stay connected with no problems using either modems. The problem lies in the workable combinations of phone lines computer resources and ISP resourses avalable. If they are saturated with incoming calls your speed will not be as fast as it would be if they were 50% saturated. I went with a different ISP and removed all strings and now I get conneced at 33,000- 46,000 each time never getting disconnected. and have downloaded programs and iformation that took over 1hr. Although the Rockwell is not the best for all. It can work for some vary well. The 3 com only gets connected at max 33,000 using same ISP ans phone lines. Also do not use a surge protector in the phon line and keep the phone cable from the computer to the wall as short as you safly can. Also keep the max connection speed to 57,600. These could resolve many problems that you are having. Believe it or not only some modems work with some ISPs.
I have a compaq with a 56k rockwell and I am constantly being knocked off line. Compaq sucks and so does rockwell!!!!!! Never again!!!!!

Throw it out. It is a piece of shit. I had Packard Bell change it three times and all three modems sucked. The last one would not even connect. Today I bought a U.S. Robotics and it is working. I hate Rockwell, would do anything to get my revenge for all the headaches they caused me :-( !!!!!
Was connecting to AOL 56kflex and x2 lines at 50k, but was getting disconnected all the time. Did the HP Riptide modem/audio card update.
Now it stays connected, but only connects at 28.8k-31.2k, to the 56kflex. Any init string suggestions?

What a piece of crap this Rockwell modem is. Can never get on and when I do I get disconnects. My old 486 PC with a 14.4K USR modem blows my P3 500 PC with Rockwell 56K modem out of the water. Pretty sad eh!!
This modem's history. USR's are the best!!

i don't have a problem with staying connected
but only at 24000 when on interent.i have a rockwell soft 56 data fax speakerphone.do you know what could be the problem
Now...does anyone wonder why Rockwell spun off the modem division and named it Conexant. This is an abbreviation or Connect...X...can't. Do yourself a big favor, use your HCF modem for a door stop and go buy a USR/3COM hardware based external modem. It will connect to anything and you can move it from computer to computer, OS to OS even MACS and Linux, just need a different cable.

I have the same problem. We had just purchased our Compaq's Presario 5852 with v90 and I connect at 26,400! It bites! I bought a new system with the hopes of connecting at a higher speed than 26,400! I had checked with my ISP and Compaq. Then I did a line test on the phone line through RoboticsUSA and it told me that my phone line is the problem...it said it had too many analogue to digital conversions on the line. SO what is my problem, really? This is very frustrating! I can connect ok, I do not get booted from my ISP very often but my computer freezes up a lot my speed is slow, and I am getting a lot of illegal operations now. So is it the modem, the computer, the phone line, or my isp? I think I will do what someone up above had suggested and demand Compaq to give me a new modem.
By the way, my resources are at 88% free...that was the first thing Compaq had me do. So that is not the problem.

I recently purchased a Rockwell HCF model modem...got a good deal on it and at first using the mfg.'s drivers could only connect at 28800. I searched and quit whining about the product until I found a tweaked driver for it....which identifies it as a Supra...anyway, now I get 46667 to 49333 regularly...I still have an occassional disconnect...but otherwise it has been a great modem. Everyones suggestion to go buy a USR/3com is short sighted as I have experienced nightmares with them as well from my customers. This site should help you:
http://808hi.com/56K/rockhcf.htm
Now fix it and stop whining...;-)
I have a Best data Soft56 56VW-PCI modem with a conexant (Rockwell) chipset. No luck getting connected other than in 10 minute increments.
I have tried all the strings and tricks above plus some others. If I find something new I will post it.
Easy!!! Go to http://www.808news.com/56k/soft56.htm
to find out more :)
Delete the software in add/remove software and get up to the version 2.1.2.161.000 and your problems will disappear.
Try looking at http://ctxex10.citrix.com/texpert.nsf/2e89dc7305e02e12852566650069ba69/8ffabf324ef2b6c68525687f006620bb?OpenDocument
But it really only says Rockwell doesn't work. Use any of the vendors files from the first link. Remove the modems software thru add/remove programs in win95 and then restart. When it restarts it will ask for a disk. Point to the file you download. U must remove thru add/remove because everytime you reboot the same shit ass driver will be installed.

GET A NEW MODEM! ROCKWELL'S SUCK!
Same problem everyone. I bought the damn thing for 25 bucks canadian dollars. Thought it was a great price. But now I realize its worth less. I'm not going to buy a new modem. I'm going to take this modem out, burn it in my fireplace, and send it to hell. Then I'm going to tell my ISP to go to hell. As soon as I told them what kind of modem I had they hung up on me. This happend twice. After I tell them to go to hell I'm going to start living 2000 with a cable modem. Its the fastest way. Its the only way. Cable Modem
I have a HP Pavilion, bought in 11/99. Have had no problems with Rockwell Modem. No disconnects. Connects most of the time at 45333 or 48600. May want to check with PC manufacturer to see if there is a patch or if there is an updated driver.
I have a rockwell/conexant soft56 data, fax, speakerphone, pci modem and it to doens't stay conected only for under 40 seconds. Plus I have 2 Isp's and both can't figure out what the problem is can someone please help.

Dear sir.
I'm looking for software rockwell hcf 56k data fax pc modem.because I lose my CD-DiskBest Regards
Listen everybody!
The facts are:
1. Both Conexant(Rockwell) HCF/HSF modems are SOFT modems, so everything (well, almost everything) is done by the modem's DRIVERS, not hardware.
2. To get it working you will need a good machine underneath the modem (something like PII-400) and a clean Windows environment.
3. It will perform poorly with games, since the games are usually great consumers of CPU time, and they have to share it with the modem.
4. It should work fine with the Internet.
So don't blame Conexant(Rockwell) for a half-priced modem that works better than half of a hardware modem!
For a comprehensive site about modems, modem chipsets and drivers go to:

Im sorry to deceive some of you out there, i agree that 3com is one of the greatest out there, but they DO make software modems. They call them WINmodems, but they should be called LOSERmodem. They won't "connect" over 31200, but their actual transfer rate will be around 24000. So if you see two internal 3coms looking the same, but one being 30 bucks+ heavier on the wallet, it's that one you must buy.
The ONLY way to be sure not to get a LOSEmodem is to buy an ALIENWARE or to build it from scratch.

go to www.hp.com then look for the support pages for Desktop Computers HP PAVILION 8550 Series an then download de patch for PAVILION products, (it contains a Riptide Driver) that gives support for a Rockwell modem that comes with Pavilion Series.
Once you got be careful, if you have any driver in the device manager remove then normaly they are in the section of other devices having any kind of conflict, and start hardware adition telling the computer that you have disk and pointing to the new ones.
It wasn't easy but it works in my HP , i'm using a Rockwell HCF 56K Data Fax PCI Modem right now and it works perfectly in W2K. In adition the sound works better with W2K drivers, programs like winamp sounds great and better than W98.good luck, and sorry for my bad english, i tried to do my best.
I was looking over this page and decided I'd like to add something new to my post from July of 99. I work for an online provider and now have the fun of working in tech support. Most of the issues with Rockwell, LTWin, and other soft modems comes from the fact that these modems use the memory of the computer to keep them running. You can change modem strings all day long and never find the single string that works all the time. What DOES work is minimizing the number of programs you have running in the background. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and count how many programs you have running. These programs take a certain percentage of system resources to run. If you start dipping below 85%, you can expect to start having connection or performance problems when online. You can individually turn off the programs by clicking "end task" after highlighting the program in the CLOSE PROGRAM dialog box where you first counted the programs. The only thing that HAS to run is EXPLORER and SYSTRAY. Turn off everything else. This is a temporary solution. You can check your system resources by going to Control Panel, select the icon that says SYSTEM. Click on the tab that says PERFORMANCE. System resources is displayed near the top as a %. The fix I just described is a temporary one that has to be done each time you turn your computer on. A more permanent way is by typing MSCONFIG in your RUN command. Select Selective startup from the first page and then click on the tab that says STARTUP. Here is a list of all the programs that are set to startup when you first boot windows. Unchecking them prevents them from starting up until you click on the icon. **CAUTION** You'd better know what you're unchecking BEFORE you do it. Unchecking the wrong thing could crash windows. Call your computer manufacturer if you're not sure.
Bottom line... system resources... or the amount of RAM that is being used by other programs... has more to do with how your soft modem performs than anything else.
Hello this is another isp technician just wanting to let you know Rockwell does not care about you as a customer and never has
they have sold out commercially for the dollar bill and forgot the american way thats why your chipset says MEXICO on the board, STOP calling your isp , go but a better quality american made modem (HARDWARE BASED TOO) us robotics should do the job .

Hey, I have a windows 2000 machine and my HCF modem is the fastest 56k modem I have ever used. I have 12 computers with a variety of different modems and operating systems (winNT, win98, Linux, Solaris, BSD, win2k pro, win2k server, beOS) and my rockwell HCF on my win2k professional beats them all out.
Well, if only it were the Rockwell. You see other, even cheaper models use the Rockwell chipset - including Netcruiser. I refer to the above disasters and reiterate.
I live in Europe-Romania. I have a Conexant SoftK56 Data,Fax,Voice,Speakerphone,Handset PCI Modem and it disconects between 8 seconds and 8 minutes. The string at&f&c1%c0s10=100s25=100 have not fixed my frequent disconnects. Also I tried other strings(AT+MS=V34 or S25=100) but it still disconnects. If I put S10=255 the modem looks like it's connected but in fact there is no connexion.
I believe the problem is with phone line but my Phone Company said that not true.
What can I do?
I thoguht I got this modem for a bargain price of NZ$60 ...it's a 'Conexant' SoftK56flex
I didn't realise it was a software modem at the time, as the box was branded 'MODEM' in big red 'MS Word-art' lettering.
Anyway, I don't have problems with disconnecting, but whenever I open a new browser window or something my computer freezes for like 30 seconds.
I'm on W2k and it's only since installing the modem. Anyone else have similar problem?

DO NOT BUY A SOFT MODEM. At least I get a bit of exercise every 1 minute out of ten when I kick the crap out of this machine.
PS it just did it AGAIN
Have the same problem with my rockwell tried everything, yer what crap.

Here's the fix for your Rockwell. It's a pci enumerator modem. Go to rockwell and get the drivers, or emial me and I can send them to you. When installing, install a pci bus under system devices, and when it asks for the driver,go have disk, and use the rockwell driver you got from windrivers.com or rockwell. Install for the driver "modem enumerator", then it will automatically detct a modem and wave device. You should then see HCF modem enumerator and also 56kHCF modem. If not do a hardware detect for it.It will install to com 3 or 4 and actually use com 1 or 2.Do not install other com ports trying to get 3,4,or 5 to appear. Then make sure the timeout for connection is unchecked, as well as the correct country code IS checked, it will unhook if it is not set. Then go to sysedit.exe in windows, and set your com ports. That is in win.ini. Windows default is 9600, reset to 115200 for ALL ports, using notepad and save. Also check com ports in your control panel "system" to be sure they al say 115200 as speed.Other settings are compresion, flow control off and fifo buffers high or off and all should work for you. The important thing to install is that the "modem enumerator is installed and appears system device manager. It will show as HCF Modem and when opened say modem enumerator. After that your modem will work.
