My computer won't start period!

Okay, I go downstairs to eat dinner, and my computer goes to sleep. All is well and good until I try to wake it up. NOTHING! Then I wait before doing a hard (Ctrl+Alt+Del) restart and the hard drive doesn't start, just the CPU fan, and the power fan... the CD Rom drive seems to be working too.
I've tried everything and now there is a spoken error from the internal speaker that I can't quite understand but it seems to be saying "------ the damage --- may be in battery --- hooked up wrong"
How can this be? I haven't touched anything in my puter for three weeks, so i doubt anything can be hooked up wrong, PLEASE WHAT DO I DO?

I'd open it up, make sure all the connections are secure. Do you know if your mother board is getting power? Is there any message on the screen? It would be nice to have a little more info.

Hooking the battery up wrong would make the BIOS unhappy, but wouldn't stop the machine operating. I've never heard of an error message being given vocally before - just the beeps during POST. Try booting from a clean boot disk and doing those usual things - virus scan, chkdsk, etc. etc. and let us know what happens.

Unfortantly all I know is that the motherboard isn't booting but it has to be getting power as everything else is (CPU fan and all) It's a PC (kind of mix and match) Sent it into the computer shop
