last night i turned off my computer cause i was going to bed, but then i forgot i needed to do something so i turned it back on and nothing showed up on the screen. at first i thought it was my monitor, but the led is orange (instead of yellow) which i believe means it is not receiving a signal. i played around with all the cables and still nothing happened. I tried switching my monitor from my AGP graphics card to my built in graphics card and still nothing showed up. I know the monitor is not disfunctional because when i unplugged the cable from the first graphics card, it said "no signal" or whatever it says. This leads me to believe that there is somethin wrong with my computer. When i push the power button, sometimes everything seems to be ok, i can hear everything running and the power LED is normal, but there is no image. However, sometimes when i power it up, the power LED flashes on and off and my dvd rom drive's power LED flashes on and off as well. Does anybody have any ideas?
I have an intel D815EEA chipset with a 1gig pentium (i believe pentium III) cpu. I haven't messed around on the inside of my computer since last september when i installed my cd burner, so i think its a software problem. Thank you for your help!

When you "turned it off", how did you do it? How long was it off before you turned it back on? What more can you tell me (us) about your computer?

Electronics sometimes go bad. If you don't get the normal 'beep' when you power on, the system is dead. You could try disconnecting all the drives and removing all the cards except the video card to eliminate them as the problem.

Curious George: i shut down my computer like normal through the start menu. sometimes when i shut down my computer it exit windows but it doesn't turn off so i have to push the power button manually. i dont know how long it was before i turned it back on.
my computer has:
Intel D815eea chipset-purchased last february
1gig pentium III-purchased last february
384mb ram(256mb of which is cheap ram from fry's electronics. could that be a problem? i bought that last summer i believe)
inboard sound and graphics
gforce 2 AGP graphics card(this is the one i use)
40gb western digital hard drive
velocd 16x burner
8x dvd rom
windows 98SEis there any way that somebody could have messed with my computer over my network? i live at a dorm so there are tons of people on the network.
drake: i dont think i have the system speake r hooked up so i never hear the beep anyways. i was gonna wait and see if it was a virus or something first before i took apart my computer.
now every time i start my computer the power LED flashes on and off and my dvd rom's power LED flashes on and off and makes a knocking sound. there is nothing in the drive though. i have to push the restart button a couple of times for it to appear that is loading normally.

The beep comes from a device on the motherboard so you don't need to have your speakers plugged in to hear it.
I rather doubt if this is a software fault because you usually get "something" on the screen.
Have you tried a different monitor?

i plugged my monitor into a different computer and it worked fine. i have 2 sticks of ram so i tried both of those by themselves and nothing happened. i removed my gforce and tried my inboard graphics card by itself, and nothing happened. i removed my lan card and nothing happened. now its striped down to i stick of ram, my mother board, cdrom, dvdrom, hard drive and floppy and still nothing is changed.
when i boot up i hear no beep.

Well, you sure have done a lot Kyle. After reading it all, I think it may come down to the CPU, the MOBO, or the PSU. You also could have a bad power switch or your BIOS may be messed up. Or, your add on display adapter may have gone out and your onboard display adapter may be disabled in BIOS.
Unhook everything from your MOBO except one stick of RAM, your CPU, and your HDD. Your BIOS can usually be restored to default settings by a jumper on the MOBO or by removing the battery for a few minutes. The default will probably enable your onboard display adapter but there may also be a jumper on the MOBO for this purpose. Next, try your RAM in different slots and try other sticks of RAM if they are available (you live in a dorm).
We next move into bigger things. I’d try a different PSU, which usually would come with its own power switch. Next, I’d swap out the CPU. Finally, you’re down to the MOBO.
In my case when this happened, it was the CPU.

Curious George:
Thanks! i took out the battery for a couple minutes and put it back in, when i turn on the computer again (with everything in it might i add) it worked! it still wont work with my onboard graphics card, so i dont know what is up with that. Thanks though, do you have any idea what might have caused this? i want to fix it before it happens again.
thanks again!

It's sometimes hard to say why computers do anything! Seems like some sort of glich shot through your BIOS and upset it.
I doubt if it is due to the battery itself but since they are pretty cheap it would seem sensible to replace it just in case (unless it's fairly new). If it's getting old maybe it couldn't hold the voltage steady when you did your off/on switch.

Kyle
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad it worked. I think that somehow, your BIOS got messed up. There are many ways that this can happen but power surges are nortorious and turning a computer off and then on as you did may have caused the problem. Or, it may be you have a bad battery. It might be worthwhile to replace it now that you know how easy it is.
I wish I would have thought of it sooner. It was the first thing I did when my computer went down.
Good luck!
