I recently got a new system. It's a cumtom built. It consists of celeron 300a (not overclocked), 64 MB PC100 ram, BH6, 3.3 GB HD, CD-ROM, CD-R, and Voodoo Vanshee AGP. My system was fine until I added a extra HD. It started to slow down very frequently for about 20 seconds. So I removed my extra HD and reinstalled win98, and problem still persists. I do not get any error msgs. I tried everything to fix this.... The slow-down process is more severe when I play games like SC and Heros3. Someone suggests that I get a new fan since I have only one fan cooling my CPU. So I ordered 3 fan heatsink, but I doubt it will help. Any ideas what might be wrong????
Please help!!!!

The extra fan probably won't do anything for this issue. But it will come in handy if you overclock your CPU.

I am suspecting that you installed intel's Busmaster IDE drivers or you have checked/enabled the DMA option for your hard disk in Windows system dettings. If so, uninstall and disable these. Use Microsoft's IDE drivers on the Win98 CD. The problem with DMA transfers is that they are very susceptible to noise in your system. When errors are detected, the disk controller has to figure out where things went wrong and then pick up where it left off. This is where the lag or delay comes in.

If this is your problem but you wanna take advantage of DMA performance, you need to get a shielded IDE cable rated for UDMA/66.

Other things to check would be BIOS settings. Make sure your memory timings are set correctly, bus speeds are correct, etc.
