Hopefully you can assist me in the reason I am having this problem! My computer freezes up only when I'm online, and not all the time it seems to freeze up more on heavy long sites similar to what a porno site page may be like! When it lock's up nothing accept for restarting the computer via the restart button on my tower work's! So in other word's pressing control/alt/delete does'nt do anything! What I have is a Tyan 1854 mother board, 256mb pc100 memory, window's 98 2nd edition and I frequently keep up on my computer's maintenance up with Nortan's System Work's 2001! So why is my computer locking up?

You might have a corrupted item in your history folder or in your cache. I first try deleteing your cache and history files.

What browser are you using? I think Internet Explorer can have bad memory leaks that will cause the computer to freeze up. Research this at Microsoft Support Knowledge Base. Below are some great troubleshooting links.

I posted info on this but can't remember which article#.
First, if you run 32bpp color, lower it to 16bpp (right click the desktop/properties) and try the web pages that locked you up up before.
If they don't lock up now, it's probably an issue between the web page/your video card and IE. Netscape never locked up on me like that no matter which colors I used.
ATI's Xpert128 AGP card has that problem. The webpage loads in 16bpp and the card defaults to 32bpp on it's own even if you set it to 16bpp.
If you have that card, I'd stick with 16bpp color, their update that fixes the problem might cause other problems. It fixed the lockups online but then the pc wouldn't do a cold start. A warm reboot or shut down and back on worked though. Getting rid of the updates was a bummer too because you have to install DirecX-8 which can't be downgraded to 7 or 6 with out a format.
If you have a different card, do what the other two posts mention. Good luck, the mfg's will blame each other or you for the problem as usual.

Had the same problem and as Original Bruce mentioned mine was due to the graphics card. I did not go for the update but reset to 16bpp and it works with no other problems

I'm having the exact same problem, but my PC will freeze up on me even if the only thing I'm using is ftp. I'm actually starting to think it is my modem, because I lose my connection a lot as well. Either that or someone is locating me when I am online and pinging me to death (is that possible?). The problem is so incredibly intermittent, yet frequent(!), that I have been unable to nail down anything specific that could be causing it. The only common denominator that I've observed is my modem. That, or maybe there is some crap running in the sys tray that could be causing the conflict? I've shutdown my palm hot sync as my latest attempt to see how long I can run without crashing, and of course the AIM is shutdown as well. This really is a pain, if anyone REALLY thinks it's my modem---and I know that at least the modem is freezing up because unless I COMPELTELY power down, if I restart using the reset button the computer won't boot all the way---it halts right as it gets to the part where the PCI devices get listed. My modem is a PCI device. Well, hope this helps those of you getting frozen to some degree, if anyone can provide info to me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks
