Whenever I open 'My Computer' or my documents it takes about 15 seconds to load it. I have seen this problem posted before but haven't found any solutions. I have cleaned all my temp folders, ran ad-aware spybot and virus scan and it has returned nothing. nothing in my start up out of the ordinary. It just takes forever for it to open up. what can i do to fix this?

Hi
Hmmm, many variations of this question do turn up. Sometimes cleaning up some index files helps, removing the quickview option or making sure there aren't too many files in any folders named "My whatever".
Another suggestion is to set all the file properties within the windows folders - to read and write and then restart the computer (windows will reset some files to read only on rebooting)
If you have run sfc since you last installed you should be able to safely repace any system files that have changed since you marked them on the initial run.

It also depends on how your antivirus is configured
Sophos afaik will chewck any folder and its contetnts as it/they are opened so also does norton (well it does on my system cos that`s the way i want it)
The cleaner and other anti/virus/trojan/worm progs also do it
Thsi can be quite noticeable especially on a slower system, My Documents used to take an age to open on my k6-3/450 system but opens a lot faster on my p3 650 and even faster if I temporarily disable all my virus checking, registry monitoring and anti trojan software.

Woof

I tried to do the sfc and a lot of files popped up that needed to be restored but i am on an hp pavilion and the installed OS is the one with the 2 discs that u can only do a reinstall with and i cannot fix the messed up files. any ideas?

Hi
I would only recommend sfc if you had run the procedure not long after installing. So I suggest don't use sfc in this situation.
Legitimate files can be changed and modified by windows or other installs. These files will appear different, which is why a lot of caution is used with sfc. SFC should be run just after you have installed and all is well. After install, you run SFC and choose an option to tag the files as ok. Next time SFC is run, it will compare the checksum it gets with the previously recorded value.
I do recommend moving all the files out of My documents or My pictures; My whatever as these files are said to be treated differently by the win os. Some time ago I read that reducing the number of files (in the My documents My etc) to below 1500 helped.
I keep very little in the My whatever folders and store files in standard folders which I try and use the 8-3 standard just in case I need to access the files from dos command.
I also meant to ask how long has it been since you defragged the hard drive? It is a good idea to backup important files before doing anything. Better safe than sorry.

i defragged last week. there isnt much in my documents to really amount to anything. this is my moms computer and shes been having problems with it and im tryin to fix it but i cant seem to figure it out. no virus' or spyware i cleaned the registry. i have seen posts about this before, still unresolved i wonder if its just one of those have to reinstall things. i really hope not.

Hi
Yeah - probably going to have to backup any data to a cd and then reinstall.
Just check in the device manager for any marked drivers first (just in case its due to a corrupt driver).
Your HP install disks are they a quick re-install, or do you have options to reinstall just system files etc??
I guess you tried deleting the secret index files and other ideas that are suggested in various webpages, to try and speed things up.
Read one of DAVEINCAPS links for another question on computing.net, and there it was suggested to keep about 100 files in each folder to speed things up.
I can't think of much more.
If you have plenty of time and are curious:
If you had another computer you could use, I would suggest install the hard drive as a slave; copy the entire hard drive over to how ever cds you need (use verify with cd burning). Then install the drive as a master all by itself. Blank the drive with killdisk and repartition and format. Then place the drive back in as a slave and copy the contents of the cd back to the hard drive. Reset the properties of the directories (eg all files on the drive) from read only to read/write. Don't forget to chage the files in the root of the drive to read/write as well.
Place the drive back in the hp (as the master) and boot up and see if there is an improvement.
Post the result.
