Comment:
I recently purchased an oem win98 cd and after I load the operating system, everything seems to work except my cd/dvd drive does not show up in windows explorer. Why would the system be able to find the CD drive to install windows, but after windows is installed, can't find it?
-the CD/DVD drive does not show up under Device Manager -I do not find an entry for NOIDE at Start>Run>Regedit>Edit>Find -I using a former Windows XP HP Pavilion machine (a730n), and didn't receive any disk with special drivers on it.
When I first loaded win98 I received a message that said "fatal exception occurred at 0148:000D13C", and when I rebooted I recieved a string of error messages that said it couldnt' find dhcpcsvc.dll, ienpstab.dll, etc.
Could that be the problem? If so, how do I fix it?
I don't have internet capability on that machine, as to install the internet I need CD capability first because my account is a DSL acccount. I can't download the file to my A drive, because the file is bigger than 1.4 MB.
Also you can burn the file to a cd. Then boot with a 98 bootdisk, choose cdrom support and copy the file to the hard drive. Then reboot into windows and run the file.
Or burn the file on a bootable cd, boot up with the cd and then copy the file to the hard drive.
Post back if you need the specific dos commands to do that.
I've copied and run the suggested intel chipset software, per DAVEINCAPS, and I get a message that says "The intel chipset software installer utility rquires a supported chipset platform running a supported operating system." I rebooted and still do not see my CD drive under win98.
You can try that one too. Getting these drivers installed is a necessary precursor to fixing the problem. It's possible some of the drivers you need were never written for 98. But it looks like this one should work.
Boot up into safe mode (F8 and choose safe mode at start-up) and then look in device manager and see if they are listed if so delete them reboot and they should be installed. Reboot again and they should work fine. (Rebooting the second time is a recommend by me if installing anything in 98 or 98SE as then it is properly configured by the system)
I ran INFINST_ENU.EXE after downloading from the second site recommended by DAVEINCAPS, and I received the same message as I got when I downloaded from the first site as requiring a supported chipset platform. When I read the associated "readme" file, it says the software only works with chipsets between the alphabetical range of 440BX AGP and 815EG - I don't see 915G on the list there, even though I do see it listed on the internet page from which I did the download. Does this mean Intel has a problem on its web download page, claiming a chipset is supported that the download file does not actually support? Also, I get a "vnetbios" error on booting up, but I'm assuming that's not related.
covers that chipset but it doesn't support 98. It's possible an older version may have 98 support.
That motherboard is an alias of Asus PTGD1-LA. Their site, or any other motherboard manuafacturer that uses that chipset, may have 98 support. I'll see what I can find.
I ran the software you cite from softpedia, and I receive the same message as I got when I downloaded from the first site as requiring a supported chipset platform.
I checked the readme.txt file from that download. It specifically states it works for that chipset and 98 SE. I ran it on my 98 SE system which has an Ali chipset and got the same unsupported chipset message. That leads me to think we're dealing with a different motherboard. Download and run Everest:
I tried to run the above recommended software from majorgeeks, and I received a message that said the installer requires win2000, and I am running win98.
When I go to the recommended download page and select to download the file, I get a message which says "Lavalys EVEREST Home Edition download will start now. If it doesn't, click here ". The download didn't start, and when I clicked "here", it took me to a page for the 2006 version, which I assume is too new.
Kind of hard to credit - the link provided in DAVE's # 16 installed normally on one of my Win98 boxes
Whatever 'pat' is downloading and attempting to install is most likely something else entirely
"When I go to the recommended download page"
??
The download should start automatically, once you select a locale from the "Free Downloads From:" section - - I suspect you're clicking on some other link on the subsequent page
In the case of #16, you should have received "everesthome220.exe"

In response to jboy, when I click on the link provided by DAVEINCAPS, I get a screen which says "Download Lavalys EVEREST Home Edition 1.10". When I click on that, nothing downloads, I simply go to another screen, where I click "here", which also doesn't download. I don't know why the file recommended by DAVEINCAPS isn't downloading.
In response to Derek, I sucessfully downloaded AIDA32, but when I run it on my win98 machine, there is nothing which displays when I select the "chipset" option. When I select the "motherboard" option, I don't see anything that looks like a chipset name, I see a string of numbers that says "63-0306-000000-00101111-082704-I915$A0005046".
When you go to "Download latest version" (top right) it should simply offer you the file to download and I see no mention of Win2000.
You then save that file to some spare folder on your HD and then double click it to install Everest.
If this doesn't work for you then list out exactly what you are doing on that website step by step, when exactly Win2000 gets mentioned, and I'll try to fathom out what is happening.
That's *extremely* puzzling, as the page that comes up from the link provided in DAVE's #16 is:
EVEREST Free Edition 2.20
you're saying 'nothing' downloads, yet you are attempting to install 'something' (you must be) if you are receiving the "installer requires win2000" message
I guess it doesn't matter much at this point, although having been unable to perform a simple download has proved to be an unexpected stumbling block - - let's hope nothing complicated is required

Derek, I click on the link you gave me, then I click on "technical" (grey tab), and it says it requires win2000 at a minimum. It does not run on my win98 machine. Are you certain you aren't running an earlier version?
I think, per DAVEINCAPS, that I am trying to run this software to see what chipset I have, is that right? The HP website says I have "Northbridge Intel i915G graphics controller hub (GMCH) and Southbridge Intel ICH6 ".
... yes, and DAVE's link at #16 says it is for "Win All" so I've no idea what this Win2000 stuff is all about. I'm also running it on XP so it isn't fussy.
I'm thinking I probably don't need to get Everest working on my win98 machine, because I have the chipset data from the HP website, and that's all we were looking for me to find under Everest, the chipset data, right? It's "Northbridge Intel i915G graphics controller hub (GMCH) and Southbridge Intel ICH6". Since its a CD drive that isn't working, not a problems with graphics, does that mean we need to find chipset software for only the ICH6, or for i915G, or for both?
I've gotta go (2.45am in UK) but sure, all you need is the chipset drivers. What bothers me is that it is a fairly high spec machine for W98SE and that it was originally loaded with XP. Maybe there are no W98SE chipset drivers available.
Yeah, the chipset is supposed to be the 915G but since the correct chipset update didn't accept it I thought there might be a different motherboard in the case. Either that or the download in #14 wasn't the right one. But as I said its readme.txt file said it supplied 98 support for the 915G.
I didn't try the everest 1.10 version download but I see it does link to the newer version. Try this:
If everest shows you do have the 915G chipset then I guess we'll have to look for another chipset download. Either that or concede the loss and install XP.
I ran the 1.1 version of Everest, and found the following: Intel Grantsdale-G i915G/GL/GV North Bridge Properties: North Bridge Intel Grantsdale-G i915G/GL/GV Revision 04; South Bridge Properties: South Bridge Intel 82801FB ICH6 Revision D3.
The reason I need to get win98 running is that I have an HP1100a scanner, from which I have created years worth of graphics ".odf" files that I can't afford to lose, and the HP1100a software doesn't run under winxp. I know of no way to migrate the ".odf" files to anything that can be read on the xp machine.
There must be some way to get it work with XP but that may be a different topic. I don't have any suggestions on that subject.
Another option would be to set up an older PC with 98 for exclusive use of the scanner.
But I'll keep looking for a chipset update that may work. Intel would write newer versions as hardware became more sophisticated but beyond the most recent 2 or 3 versions it's hard to find the older ones.
I still don't understand why that version didn't work. Did you delete the other update file? The README.TXT file may have some info that may help. You can extract it, or any or all of the files, by using winzip.
They all appear to be newer than the version you've already tried. I downloaded the first one--the most recent--and checked its readme.txt. It showed 98 support. I guess give it a try. (Note that downloads 1 and 2 are the same as are 3 and 4.) If that doesn't work try #3.
I ran the software you recommended above, entering "infinst_autol.exe -OVER IDE" and I get the same error message as requiring supported operating system and chipset platform. Is it possible that the VNETBOIS error I receive on startup is messing up something in my system that makes the infinst software not recognize it as a win98 system? The infinst software you recommended sure looks like it should run on my machine - why wouldn't it run???
I'm not sure why it's not installing. Those updates are for 98 SE and up. You're sure you have SE and not FE?
It shouldn't be a factor but you might try dropping the RAM to 128 meg or so, at least temporarily.
Is this a fresh OS installation or an upgrade? If it's fresh you might want to reformat and try again. Or are the scanner files on the same drive as the OS? There were instructions in the readme.txt about putting the drivers on the hard drive and then installing windows. That way the installation would pick them up right away.
When I read section 8, I was confused. Am I supposed to reformat the hard drive and use the boot disk to enter some kind of dos command to copy the INFINSET.EXE to the hard drive and execute it? I also don't recognize what the "<" means where the instructions say to copy the win98 files from <INF Extract Directory>. How do I find the files they want me to copy? Am I supposed to be doing all this out of DOS, it its "prior to OS installation?
What it wants you to do is create a directory/folder (named something like WIN98) on a blank formatted hard drive and copy the contents from the WIN98 folder on the 98 cd into the similarly named folder on the hard drive.
Then on a working PC, extract the chipset driver file with winzip. Choose to extract to a folder named CHIPSET (the name really doesn't matter, they just need to be in a place you can find them). In that CHIPSET folder will be a subfolder named WIN98SE. Burn that WIN98SE folder to a cd. Put it in the other computer and copy the contents of WIN98SE folder on the cd into the WIN98 folder on the hard drive.
The result is a directory/folder on the hard drive with the 98 installation files and the chipset update files. There will be a SETUP.EXE file in that folder which you'd use to start the installation.
The above requires some familiarity with dos commands. If you're not sure of those post back for more details.
