MWave Sound and Modem Drivers

Comment:

I recently had to reformat a Hard disk drive on a Fugitsu P166 computer and in the process I have lost the driver files for the sound card and modem. The sound card is a MWave and as far as I'm aware the modem is a 33.6. Could anyone please tell me where I can download the necessary files to get up and running again.

Thanks

Just wanted to add a little comment about my now ex-mwave... I purchase one of these damn things about 2 1/2 years ago for $66 from a local store in town... Was told well we provide no support for them and have no driver disks.. And i'd say they had ruffly 90 of them at the time... After finally locating the damn drivers online after maybe 22 hours of searching the web it ran ok for awhile but then it didn't want to do both sound and modem at the same time.. I looked into the matter to figure out that these shitty modem/soundcard combo's are cheap lame products that conflict with each other repeatedly.. Basically they told me well a single DSP chip can't run 2 things at once.. So you either have to use the sound or the modem but never together... After 2 1/2 years of struggling with this hassle I have finally found the answer to my problem... I have simply destroyed this damn thing and decided that it'd much much much easier to just invest the stupid $35 to get a new modem that doesn't use this shitty technology since its a waste of my time which i've invested every bit of maybe 1400 hours hassling with this damn modem... All i've got to say now is "Thank god I no longer have to deal with such shit!"

Evan Rackley - Yes I know i sent it as Anonymous but I feel like adding my name too :P

Well I saw everyone's comments here and decided to add my two cents. I bought a IBM Mwave 33.6 modem (upgradeable to 56K) for only 40$ (a new 56k in Canada is worth about 100$). I was so happy because I thought I got a good deal. Well the damn thing worked sporradically for about a week after I bought it, trying to install itself on COM3 when I have no COM3. (And there aren't any jumpers or any way to set the hardware.) This was about a year ago and it hasn't worked since. I fight every day with it, uninstalling and re-installing the damn thing with no luck. I've even tried installing on different ports and using different IRQ settings. I keep getting "no response from modem" and messages that it was either off-line, turned off, or incompatible (and it an internal modem). The damn things are junk, you would think IBM is a quality brand name but its not and they don't even back up their products. My advice to all you driver seekers is, instead of wasting your time, spend a little money and go out and get yourself a real modem.

Well for all of those who are still looking here is the site to get them from:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/searchfiles.html

in the search keyword type: mwave

Like the dude before me said, the boards are peices of shit, but I bought one for $2, just to see how the sound part of it works. But think twice, here is a URL from some very disgruntled people, read it before you decide to install the drivers.

ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/commercial_desktop/
You will need to download "wmm95_1.exe" wmm95_2.exe , wmm95_3.exe , wmm95_4.exe and then uncompress them onto 4 blank disks, then you will have a new set of installation disks. Hope this helps, standard disclaimers apply, etc....

What a waste-o-time !! Got 2 of those goddam mwave-combos from an ebay-fellow. He swears he got it to work like fresh rolls in an instant: add new hardware manually - other devices - IBM - dolphin - mwave -dsp adaptor .we did just that, on a virgin WD caviar, new win98/2 - after it was in - it restarts - CRASH ! - fatal error in VXD SHELL (01). push the button off - ON again - window starts to boot - BANG !! crash again . Thats it. Spent countless hours to find drivers.
called IBM - they played it stupid:-" never heard of such a problem "...! ( sounds familiar?) searched IBM tech-support - found modems-mfg-spec#'s - mine was not there:
75H9985 / model:MD2781 w/chip mwave IBM38/2780pro (cant imagine a "pro' is gonna even consider that shit...).
took it out - put it into another machine - stalled again. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP?? thx. Heimo.800-801-6119

It took us some time to findout, but the drivers for the MWAVE SOUNDCARD/MODEM (also used by ibm for their Aptiva Series)
Chipset: MWAVE 38MDSP2780, DO THE FOLLOWING IN WINDOWS 98:

CONTROLL PANEL, ADD NEW HARDWARE
NEXT, AGAIN NEXT, CLICK NO, CLICK NEXT, CLICK NO AGAIN, SELECT FROM LIST, NEXT, NOW CLICK 'OTHER DEVICES' AND NEXT AGIAN NOW IN THE MANUFACTURERS BOX CLICK ON IBM, IN THE MODELS BOX CLICK ON 'IBM DSP'THEN NEXT, NEXT, AND FINISH.

REBOOT YOU PC NOW, AND YOU WILL HEAR SOUND !

Select your country code for your modem now, using the program that win98 intalled for you in your programm group !

SOMETIMES IT IS MORE EASY THAN YOU THINK !

GOOD LUCK !

Drivers for MWAVE are part of the Windows 98 driver base. To update or load drivers for MWAVE, do the following:

1.) Go to Control Panel, System and Device Manager. Look for a device called IBM DOLPHIN MWAVE DSP ADAPTOR. If it is there, when you reboot your system, windows will install all of the drivers automatically. If the drivers are installed, then there is something else wrong.

If that driver is not listed, go to ADD NEW HARDWARE in the Control Panel. Windows will search for Plug-n-play devices first. Let it!. When it finishes, it will ask to search for non plug-n-play, chose NO, I want to select it myself.

The next page to appear is hardware types. Choose ?Other devices. NEXT. Then in the left column, choose IBM (Ignore IBM Corporation and IBM PC Company). On the left side scroll down until you find the MWAVE DOLPHIN DSP Adaptor. Highlite it and choose next.

Keep choosing NEXT until the FINISHED appears. Windows will ask you to reboot. Respond with YES. When the system reboots, Windows will then automatically install all the correct drivers.

To check that windows installed all of the drivers, go to control panel and click on modem. chose diagnostics and highlite the com port the modem is at, and choose more info. If the driver is installed properly, windows will be able to communicate with the modem.

Also, go to system and device manager, and look for the sound drivers. If you open up the the ladder by clicking on (+), you will see all of the drivers installed. Also, exit from system and go to sounds. You can test the sound card by choosing a sound and seeing if you hear it.

Hope this works for all of you having troubles.

Ok guys, I too have an MWave with an Acer Aspire 4000 MT. I upgraded to Windows 98 and yes, Windows 98 does include the MWave drivers, BUT, be careful all of you that live outside the US and Canada, it does not include any other country in it's database!! The MWave Modem does need to be properly configured to work with local telephony systems, and that trick is done by selecting the country in the Country Selection applet.

The MWave does work under Windows 98, but I still have one problem, it does not play MIDI files (so far), well, let me explain that last one. When you run the DXDiag.exe program you can choose which midi port to test, well, if you check directly the MWave midi port and the MWave midi Sinthetizer, it DOES work, and quite fine!!, but if you try to test it with the Microsoft Sinthetizer or the Midi Map port, you will have a dreaded blue screen with a VXD error!! It happens because the predefined MIDI port is the Microsoft Sinthetizer (that is a software port) instead of the MWave Midi Sinthetizer (which is a hardware port), so I still have to work on that, if anyone knows how I can change the prefered device for Midi in Windows 98 send me an e-mail, ok?

By the way I have the Drivers (not the most recent ones though) for the MWave data/fax/modem at 32kb and they work for Canada, the US and Mexico, if anyone is interested send me an e-mail too. :oD

I have IBM Aptiva 2144 M50 Pentium 100 MHz. It came with 28.8 Baud MWave Modem. Up until now it was working fine. Recently I tried to dial a phone number using dialpad.com free phone service. My computer gave the following error message and denied me the access to this service. The error message was:

MWAVE0001:Mwave Modem Internal Error
Primary Code: 1[0*0001]
Secondary Code: 52[0*0034
File MWMSPCFC.C
Line 1738

Please send me your suggestion.

Thanks

the drivers as i found out were on win98, and it actually installed fine for me - AFTER MONTHS and MONTHS of looking for a damn driver it was right under my noses. the sound seem to work fine, the modem is another story. some of you that had it working BEFORE, was there a special adapter or something for the phone jack? Everytime i try to use the modem it just messes up all my other phones thats connected to the same line in different rooms. Mess up as in it makes the line seem as if it is off hook and the damn thing just starts making that annoying beeping tone! and the only way to stop is to disconnect and reconnect the line to the modem. What a peice of junk! I was hoping this time i had it! like i said the sopund is working, the modem almost work? AGAIN IS THERE A SPECIAL ADAPTER THAT I NEED? for my BOCA sound/modem i need a special adapter to work correctly, and i wonder if i need something of the same sort. (YES, i have trieds the adapter from my BOCA sound/modem and it doesn't help)

I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR MOST OF ALL THE PROBLEMS LISTED. BEING CONFRONTED WITH MOST OF THESE PROBLEMS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS I HAVE SPENT COUNTLESS HOURS ANALYZING AND WORKING TOWARD A SATISFACTORY GOAL.IBM COULD SURE TAKE SOME LESSONS FROM MICROSOFT ABOUT SUPPORT. WHEN IT ALL BOILS DOWN ITS IBM THAT BLEW IT, NOT ALL THE MANUFACTERERS CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE.

I recently had to reformat a Hard disk drive on a Fugitsu
P166 computer and in the process I have lost the driver
files for the sound card and modem. The sound card is a
MWave and as far as I'm aware the modem is a 33.6.
Could anyone please tell me where I can download the
necessary files to get up and running again.

I have to concur with everyone. I have an MWave MD-2781/I1, and it sucks balls. The Drivers are on the 98 CD yes, but if you install then and restart, you get that oh so nice BLUE SCREEN VXD error. Tried to disable the sound and just use the modem also, no luck. Driver support is listed all of this site for people that need the drivers, but I have to tell you, if you get the damn thing to work, let me know when you ready for another one, cause I am selling this piece of s---.

Want to fix your Mwave problems! ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/aptiva/setup.exe
Download this file, It's over 7 Meg. Run the setup.exe file. When it ask if you are removing the adapter say no. Click the last prompt the computer shuts down. Take out the Mwave modem/soundcard. Replace the modem & sound card, standard cards will do.Reboot and install the new components. Voila!! Your Mwave problems are over. Worked for me,(after 2 @#!%^&$% of trying to re-install the Mwave following all the instructions)Thanks to the person who suggested this ftp site.

I have a Mwave 33.6 data fax Vod modem.
I Re-formatted hard drive and installed win98 I installed the drivers off windows 98 disk
I did all the windows troubleshooters.
I installed the "other devices" IBM DSP sound and game crap. I get no modem. I dont even want sound! I just want to dial!Im trying to set up this Aptiva for my "can't work the VCR" Mom... with email ,internet and solitair. Any suggestions?
I understand that ther is this link...
ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/aptiva/setup.exe
But I also understand that the download is
7 megs. I am kind of a novice. How would I do this? Download it onto (5) 3 1/2 Floppy HD disks? Would that work?
Willthe modem work again if I borrow someones win95 disk and reformat and install 95 again?
The good thing about computers is they are convenient and simplify your life.
