Comment:
A computer at a course I am attending is windows 98 or 98SE
I don't use the computer myself but when the tutor turns it on it won't get passed the bios details screen. From where I am sitting in the classroom the bottom line of the screen says F1 to enter. The tutor has to press F1 to start windows loading. Once windows loads, it works fine. The computer is plugged into a projector screen so I wonder if perhaps the bios needs to be flashed as I am assuming the PC is an older one because it has windows 98. The system unit case is a tower.

Or perhaps its just a simple setting somewhere because once F1 is pressed it will load and run ok.

Thanks

"so I wonder if perhaps the bios needs to be flashed"

The 'need' to flash isn't something that'll pop up on the screen - that's something normally determined by the user, in order to rectify a specific issue or to provide compatability with hardware not available at the time of manufacture.

As implied, that sort of message indicates a minor hardware or settings issue, and doubtless can be easily addressed ('computer 101')

Flashing BIOS is something that is rarely required and best avoided unless essential.

I'll confess, I'm a 'flash virgin', as it's just not something I've ever needed to do - and I'm in the category "too many to count" (when asked "how many computers do you own?")

Much like formatting or defragging, flashing is often considered a blanket solution by the inexperienced.

Familiarity with BIOS messages is pretty much a prerequisite to computer repair & maintenance

Amen. You wouldn't believe the response you get from "well-meaning customers" who flash their machines, and are then told they now have a 30lb. paperweight....

I think the F1 means enter the bios and adjust the bios settings to suit the computer and the operating system you are using - an inexperienced observation of mine - but I have just spent 3 days of trial and error Windows98 installation and I now have an AthlonXP 1800 machine using a PCChip M810LR-H motherboard and have a serial port Microsoft Force Feedback Joystick at my command - I've been trying to get this setup working for months...or is that years ?...
