mueexe.exe, missing file? & Reinstalling Windows 98

Hi,
When I try to run any application, like a game or a program, it says that it can't find mueexe.exe file, and asks to locate this file manually. I don't have it in my computer or on my Windows 98 CD-ROM. I'm asking you for help, just look for this file on your computer. If you have it, please send it to me.
If you think it's a virus, answer my second question, which is how to reinstall Windows 98? When I put the Win98 CD in, it autoruns, but the options don't work because of the missing mueexe.exe file.
PLEASE, HELP ME.
Thanx

Yes, it is a virus, and must be removed before you do anything else. Reinstalling windows will not get rid of a virus.

I'm having the same problem but with a program called windos.exe. It has found its way into a replacement for the explorer.exe shell. I have deleted the windos.exe file and another related file msrexe.exe....now the real problem--> I can't run any file with an .exe extension. I have tried to edit the registry from DOS but with limited success so far. Is there any help other than totally reinstalling windows?

I can still start up windows and my dial ups work and Internet Explorer, but everything else needs mueexe.exe . It would be a great help if you or someone could contact me and tell me where I can download this file.

all you people have to do is go to find files and type msdos edit and then click on it and then matts response number "5" and remove the virus using msdos edit. Its really easy if you dont know what to do email me or something cause it really sucks not having that virus in the computer.

HAHAHA!! All you fools..

Its a trojan used by:
BackDoor-G2, BackDoor-G2.gen, BackDoor-G2.svr.20, SubSeven v2.0, SubSeven v2.1, SubSeven v2.1 Gold

All these are progs. which can connect to your computer and mess with it.. did you recieve a file that did nothing but load dos, or play dirty screensavers, how about shut down your computer for no reason??

You need to delete this file AND go read info on how to delete the settings for the trojan horse!!

Remember MAgMA owns you all..
Don't reinstall windows.. everything, EVERTHING software related CAN be fixed!!

Peace

you do not need muuexe.exe unless you want to be reinfected. What you need to do:

Run regedit. If you cannot, open a DOS prompt, and at c:\windows type REN REGEDIT.EXE REGEDIT.COM then go back to windows and double-click regedit.com

The rest of this is from Network Associates' web site:

4) Remove references to the trojan from these keys of the registry

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\
shell\open\command

They should contain only the value not including brackets ["%1" %*].

5) If applicable, remove any keys that run the main trojan under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\RunServices\

And

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run\

6) If applicable, delete the registry key if it exists

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dl

and exit Regedit

7) If applicable, edit WIN.INI and remove the reference to the trojan from the run= line in the [windows] section.

8) If applicable, edit SYSTEM.INI and remove the reference to the trojan from the shell= line in the [boot] section. It should just contain the file EXPLORER.EXE.

9) Restart the system.

THE SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM IS SIMPLE... AS YOU MAY'VE READ IT'S A FILE USED BY A TROJAN...ALSO YOU MAY KNOW THAT MANY ANTIVIRUS DETECT IT, AND CAN ALOS DELETE IT BUT THE PROBLEM, WITH THAT FILE, IS THAT AS PART OF IT'S MECHANISM IT MAKES THE FILE MUEEXE.EXE (THE ON YOU'VE RECENTLY DELETED WITH THE ANTIVIRUS, CUZ IF NOT, YOU WOULD NOT BE HAVING THE PROBLEM) THE DEFAULT APLICATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE .EXE & .DLL EXTENISION. THEREFORE, IT'S REQUESTED BY THE SYSTEM EVERY DAMN TIME YOU WANT TO RUN A PROGRAM.

WELL, THE SOLUTION....

IF YOU KNOW HOW, GET IN A DOS BOX...
AND TYPE THIS

copy c:\windows\regedit.exe c:\windows\regedit.com
(THIS WILL MAKE A COPY OF THE REGISTRY EDITOR TO A.COM executable ALLOWING YOU TO RUN THE PROGRAM, CUZ IT WILL NOT BE HAVING THE CONFLICTIVE .exe EXTENSION.. )
THEN, TYPE

regedit.com

THE REGSITRY EDITOR WILL BE OPENED..
In that window, click on
EDIT|Search
and the type this to be seeked..

mueexe.exe

once, it's find, delete the entries. (for those who are not familiarized with the term, I mean text line on the right Panel that contains tha name of the exe file that you already know and hate...
It's somehting like

(Predeterminate} "C:\WINDOWS\MUEEXE.EXE"

or

(Default) "C:\WINDOWS\MUEEXE"

(Sorry but My Windows is in Spanish, so I don't remember which one (PREDETERMINATE, or DEFAULT , do Microsoft guys, used). I 'm pretty sure the correct one is "Default", but don't worry about that, cuz you'll find it anyway,... Also notice, that the DIRECTORY, i.e. C:\WINDOWS\ may vary form one machine to another. The important thing is to delete any line that contains the mueexe.exe text.
To delete it, click (just once) on the word between brackets, then RIGHT click on it and choose delete, and then select ok...

Keep tracking (and deleting) till no more matches are found...

To those who know a bit about re registry, the major damage (well, troubles) is done by the line that contains what i've already said, in the "exefile" and "dllfile" keys inside HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
To those, who don't, and want to know that the heck i'm talkin'about, once you've found the line with the text "mueexe" in it, look at the bar below and you'll see
something like
My PC\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile

and for the other I've mentioned (i.e. for .dll files)
My Pc\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile...

FEEL SECURE TO DO THIS, YOU WANT AFFECT ANYTHING BUT THE MODIFICATIONS, THE VIRUS HAD DONE..
THAT'S ALL... if ANY QUESTION, JUST MAIL me....

Doing this will unlink the file to the .exe extensions

These files are related with a password stealing program installed on your machine.
If you still need assistance on how to solve this problem then email me, I will send you a small program that will remove the errors and restore connection back to normal without reinstalling the operating system.

I am an anti-virus technicain.

This is a backdoor virus, it gives hackers remote access to your computer. Go to McAfee.com, they have removal instructions. Deleting the files will not get rid of the full virus. There is a string in the registry that must be edited, but this virus can stop you from getting into your registry. Try renaming the registry to regedit.bat, then go into the registry. If that does not work, then you must use the undo.reg file listed on the removal instructions. I would advise you to get a firewall. The hacker that put this on your machine knows your IP address and might try to hack you again. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Do a search for backdoor on the Virus Information library, it is in the anti-virus link. Then look for backdoorg2, if you have this virus the hacker knows EVERYTHING. It uses a sub7 interface for the hacker, which is a great hacker tool. To prevent further infections keep you anti-virus software updated, and GET A FIREWALL!!!
